Determination is a must. Do a web search for quitting sites, they will give you advice on how to start to change your smoking habits and support during the most difficult times.
I gave up over 7 years ago. I tried cold turkey but I just went back to smoking after a few days. What worked for me in the end was a gradual reduction in the number I smoked over a couple of weeks (I was on 40 a day) then I started using nicotine gum. Not a whole one at a time, just a small amount. I hated the taste of the stuff :( YUKKY!!!
Drink plenty of water to flush the toxins out of your system and buy a stress ball :) Find a new hobby that will keep your hands busy, I found that really helpful and the family will never be cold again as they all have enuf wolly pulleys to last a lifetime!
But you really need to work at it, it will be difficult at times but it is so much nicer when you are free of it. You smell a lot nicer and have more money in your pocket! lol

1. Force yourself to not buy them, or make yourself spend the money on something else

2. Increase caffeine and junk food consumption

3. Sleep more

4. Break coffee mugs

5. Smoke the butts because they are gross

6. Drink lots of coffee and listen to loud music and dance around like youre in a mosh pit

7. Smoke a little herbal tea for weaning from enjoying the inhalation of smoke

8. Increase consumption of niacin

9. Spend some time outdoors, at least as long as it would take to smoke a cigarette, no reason to go outside without cigarette but there's the loss of observation of nature you would get while smoking

10. Block out all sunlight (?)

11. Hot baths/cold baths; cold water poured over head

12. Drink ice water

since you smoke that much everyday, your body got adjusted having these poisons running ur body. That's why people with more serious drug problems can actually die by quiting abruptly. You hav to take decrease your amount of cigarettes maybe every few weeks or whatever you're comfortable with. The reason why you were coughing and stuff (tryign to not smoke) was because your body was so used to having 2-5 cigarettes a day. So each week you should decrease slowly from 2-4cigarettes, then another few weeks, 2-3, then so on.

I've just been to have electromagnetic treatment see: http://www.smokingrelief.co.uk/. It stimulates the body to get rid of smoking related toxins. It ain't cheap - £300 but will be worth it if it works.

I'm on day 2 and have no desire for a cigarette. Oddly you feel you should be having one, like after a meal, but then you think actually I don't want one!

I've been a smoker for 40 years and have tried everything else, so am hoping this is a go-er.

This is tough. I smoke and tried with the patch. It worked for 8 months then I went back. The "experts" say the best way is just throw them out and never look back. Majority of people that quit , quit forever that way. I know of at least 7 people who did it that way. BUT it is hard and you must be determined and sick of smoking. My husband did that 20 years ago, still hasn't smoked.
I don't know how they do it, but they do. I guess they just get fed up and have great will power

Self-Determination is of the most importance.

I quit 7 months ago. Before that I smoked for 13 years, 12 pieces a day on average.

My experience is for the first 5 - 7 days it's about PHYSICAL withdrawl symptoms, then for the next 1 - 2 months, it's all about PYSCHOLOGICAL addictions.

My advice is to get more information (try NHS's website) to convince yourself to make definite determination.

Remember, for your own health & pocket!

You are going to have people write Don't light up, Don't buy anymore packets, Patches etc...
But I write just give up Cold Turkey, you will always feel like to have a smoke especially when freinds are smoking around you and when you are out for the night. When I gave up smoking it was bloody hard, but eventually smoke smells didn't bother me anymore.

You can do it, Cold Turkey the only way.

i stopped smoking two years ago.. i used to smoke between 20 and 30 a day.. when i decided i wanted to stop, i bought a book it was called the easy way to stop smoking by alan carr, you can get it in most good book stores, i got mine from whsmith..
You need willpower and need to really want to stop.. all the time you are reading the book you continue to smoke, the book tells you when to have your last cig.. as you are reading it you realise you just don,t need or want cigs.. i have never looked back,, there were times when i found it really hard and thought god i need a cig but when i felt like that i would just refer to the book again.. give it a try. it worked for me.. it is not an expensive book less than a tenner.. good luck i hope you manage to stop..

Find a diet that is good for diabetics by lowering the output of insulin, by lowering sugar intake. Do the diet for 2 weeks, faithfully, then stop cold turkey. Keep doing the diet. The diet will help to prevent the weight gain that many experience after stopping, and will probably control the cravings for cigarettes or substitutes.

If you need diet book suggestions, try the library link at www.hufa.org. I found the Protein Power book the easiest to follow, but then my problem is low blood sugar and carbohydrate addiction - not smoking. I understand that smoking is the second hardest habit to break (after carbohydrate addiction).
