I've the same problem. My mom is 57 this week and I had no idea what to get her. I'm on a students budget so I'm kind of limited.
-I was thinking either tickets for a show or the theatre
-Something to wear
-Beauty salon
-Bring her out for a meal
-Bottle of wine or whatever she likes to drink

I got my mom a gorgeous handbag. If you shop around you can get something for a good price. This bag is dark brown genuine leather which would usually cost a fortune. It was reduced from €120 to €63. Which means I could also get her a dvd and some flowers or wine.
Of course a funny card is essential !!

Not stuff because once you get over 50, you don't need much stuff. Experiences are always welcome - going for a day out to somewhere she's always wanted to go to; weekend at a nice hotel with evening meals, in a location she likes e.g. near the sea/ in the countryside/ London whatever. Night at the theatre to see a musical or something - if she likes that type of thing. Meal at a restaurant that serves the type of food she enjoys. Vouchers are good, but she'll know how much you spent and might say you shouldn't be wasting your money, so that wouldn't feel too good. Lunch at a nice hotel is good too. Good luck.

Women, especially older women, always like receiving flowers.
You coluld always take her out for a nice meal.
Depending on your budget, and where you live, is there a show in London that she would like to see? If so and providing you can afford it, as well as time, you take her to see a show with a meal before or after. there are plenty of offers on the internet such as lastminute.com
If money is tight for you though im sure that she would just appreicate that bunch of flowers and the chance to spend time with you and her family at home.

A rocking chair and a bunch of flowers in it! Surprise her, it would be nice when she enters her living room and see the chair there with the bunch of flowers sitting in it! Good luck, you're so sweet!
