Ok assume you have a worksheet which has the following columns: Person, Jobtitle, Age, Salary and you have rows of data inputted.
Select the whole range including Headers (best to insert headers if you don't have them)
From the 'Data' menu select 'Pivot Table...'. When dialog shows up simply select 'Next', 'Next' and 'Finish'
You will then get a new dialog with your field names and a blue-bordered Pivot-Table box in a new tab. Next you need to drag-and-drop these Fields into relevant frames.
Start with dragging your 'Person' field into the 'Drop Row Fields Here' area. Next drag your 'Age' field into the 'Drop Column Fields Here' area.
It generally makes sense to drop your amount field (in this case the salary) into area marked 'Drop Data Items Here'
You will immediately see you Pivot-data with selected items and sub+grand totals.
Now you can drag either 'Person' or 'Age' off the Pivot-table into any area outside table and it would 'remove' that item and then you can replace that with for example your Jobtitle.
Experiment to get different views...you'll soon get the hang of it..

Try using excel help - it's got detailed instructions on how to do it. That or just trial and error. Those are the methods I use.
