They aren't even in the same league!!!! If you are young, hip and happenin' I'd say take the golf, I have always thought Lexus to be an old man's car.

Both are very good cars, but I would say buy the Golf unless you have a dam good salary. I say this because I was told by an ex Lexus owner that to maintain it cost a packet, he also said that you can only get your parts from a Lexus dealer and as they have the monopoly on that car, they can charge what they like as they know you cannot get spares anywhere else.

Ok the Lexus if looked after properly etc shoul be super reliable, so in the end if you own it over a long period thyen the running costs should even out, Japanese engineering like Toyota who are our local Lexus agent, is absolutely brilliant, the apprenticeship training for Toyota is supposed to be around the best apprenticeship training about.

Re the VW, well they are rock solid cars, I owned a merc C220 Elegance for 3 years and not a spot of trouble, even after 150k that's good old German engineering fror you.

Good luck mate.

I had an IS200 from new and recently sold it after 5 years with 70k miles. It was still as solid as ever and there wasn't a rattle or squeak anywhere. Everything worked and the car was as smooth as ever. No breakdowns, no problems. MPG wise, the car wasn't that great but on a run with a light right foot, I was getting about 31 to the gallon. Around town however, the mpg dropped very noticeably. My car had full Lexus service history which wasn't cheap but I considered this as insurance as a quality car should receive quality care. When you go looking at one, make sure you check the Inside edge of the front tyres as even when the tracking is perfectly setup, the outside of the tyres looks great but the inside wears down to nothing and these need replacing every 15k. It's a prestige car and the IS200 and dealerships regularly come out highly placed (if not top) in the JD Power review. Maybe one day I'll be able to have another one...

Test drive both and see what you think.

The lexus is going to be more reliable although both should be good on that front.
I personally would go for the lexus simply because it's rear wheel drive, has a straight 6 engine and looks much cooler. I've never liked golfs To be honest and if your after a car like that buy a Seat Toledo V5 or a Leon Cupra. Same chassis, same build quality but cheaper to buy and cheaper to service.

I own a Lexus is200 Sport, i love it. The drive is good, its safety and security is unrivalled and the Lexus dealers are the best in the business. Downside? Acceleration could be better, top end is good, but takes a while to get there..... Hope this helps.

It's got to be the Golf. Golf has all the heritage of being a great german car, also it will depreciate less.
