I have Sociology coursework which involved asking people questions. I now have all the results I need and need to do some percentages and things like that.
If I gave one of the catorgaries to you, could you help me out?
One of the catagaries is How Worried are you about Crime in your area? I have got all my results ack and have ended up with this:
Very Worried
Quite Worried-5
Not Very Worried-15
Not Worried at all-1
How would I work out percentages from that, for each sub heading? ie, work out the percentage of women who said they were quite worried?

you havent given a figure for very worried - lets take it as 0

so 0 + 5 + 15 + 1 = 21

5/21 = 0.23

0.23 x 100 = 23

23%!!!! that is how many are quite worried!

divide the number in the category by the number in all categories and multiply by 100!!

ta da!

Total number of people in survey= 0 + 5 + 15 + 1= 21

Percentages:
Very worried= 0%

Quite worried= 5/21 * 100= 24%

Not very worried= 15/21 *100= 71%

Not worried at all= 1/21 * 100= 5%

The percentages have to equal 100% when you total them.

Cinderella and Stuart K are on the right track.

Remember, its only a small percentage of people whom took part in your study and so the data is not a true representative of the whole population etc

Also, peoples levels of 'worriness' can differ. So what one person person may class as 'not very worried' could be someones perception of 'very worried' and so forth

add all the answwers together: 21
therefore 100 % = 21 people

so 5/21 = x%/100
5*100/21 = x%
x% = 23.8%

15*100/21 = y%
y% = 71.4%

1*100/21 = z%
z% = 4.8%
