Please go to the local spca or animal shelter and save a nice female kitten's life. Immediately take her to a vet for a checkup and arrange to get her spayed. There are too many kittens and puppies in shelters being euthanized to waste money purchasing animals. Have a happy!

Why buy a cat or dog when there are literally thousands dying in shelters across the country every single day?!?!

There is a huge overpopulation problem with cats. There's no reason to buy one. Check out Petfinder.com.

You mentioned a large backyard also. Does this mean you are planning on keeping the cat outdoors at times? I really, really hope not. It's just not safe. The average lifespan of an outdoor cat is only about 2 years, where indoor cats on average live to be between 10 and 20 years old.

I'd go adopt one =) Even if you pick a specific breed for its good temperment, it isn't a guarantee since every cat is different. I got my two cats from a pregnant cat dropped at the doorstep of my sister's veterinary hospital. They're the most adorable things ever and are always very friendly to everybody. They hardly ever scratch and sometimes only nip playfully. They're very attached to people and will go around the house mewling and dropping dish rags everywhere if we leave them alone for too long (or go to sleep)

Anyways, sorry for blogging on your question. I have no idea what breed my cats are (they're huge and long-haired compared to their very petite Siamese-looking mom) but I love them all the same! It doesn't matter if you get a specific breed; it's no guarantee that they'll be perfect for you.

I agree with Jenn and Al get a cat from a shelter why buy a certain breed and pay a lot of money when you can get a wonderful cat or kitty from your local shelter, I have two from my local shelter and my other two my husband found at work when they were just days old(lucky me!!! I got to bottle feed them)

Cats are different from dogs. Just get any cat from the animal shelter. They are all the same. Play with it and check out its temperment-notice how much it sheds, also. Good luck.

Shelter cats are generally healthier then pure breeds. They have less genetic disease and seem to be smarter.
