I occasionally read the Qur'an for more knowledge but I noticed that the explanations at the bottom of every page are longer than the main text. I can only say about the english version as i don't read arabic and i noticed an english version that is very hard to understand. I would have wanted a Qur'an all by itself and leave the readers something to meditate or think about. I think that all muslims just believe every explanation without any question.

The Qur'aan is from God.
The Explanations are added to aid the readers who do not have knowledge of Arabic.
Also, certain verses were revealed at certain times - so the circumstances during the time of revelation have to be understood eg. during time of war, etc.
Also, it is sometimes difficult to translate something 100% correctly, so footnotes are added to aid translation.
When you look for a meaning in a dictionary, usually more than 1 meaning is given as well as different contexts eg. noun, verb, etc.

Steve the Quran is full of guidlines, rules and religious judgments for people to follow.
these things have to be more than 100% accurate, because we follow them and even use them in courts and making constitutions.
so all the mentioned above cant be written in abstract, and left to our meditation, the Islamic world would've collapsed out of chaos if the Quran had no details or explianations.
and about Muslims believing anything, this is completely wrong, u have no idea how many Islam scientists are there around the world, analyzing and gathering facts for every single word in the Quran, we (Muslims) ask sooo many questions about Islam all the time, and when we get facts we are convinced.
and that is why u never find a Muslim who converts to other religions, because having faith in Islam is always based on facts and proofs.

one more thing i wanna tell u steve, God gives hasanat (good points and blessings) to people who make an effort to read Quran and gives more Hasanat for every letter that u cant read or understand. and thats how God the merciful loves people:)

If you speak Arabic you will know how hard some verses are. It's like the Bible, written in old-style-English. I have not read it, but the word "thou" is not used any more now a days, right? So is the Arabic in which the Quran is written in, the Words of God/Allah are not the same as those of an ordinary human being. Some of them need explaining even to us Muslims and Arab Muslims. This is what we believe in, if you don't agree that these are God's words, I hope you respect our beliefs, we are happy with them.

1st of all Qu'ran or Furqan means -- the Critereon to Judge BETWEEN RIGHT AND WRONG. it is not a Book of Law and Order but rather a Book of Guidance. Guidance is revealed and it id now the Freewill of Individual to DECIDE the -- Faith and Fate.

actually the translations of Quran u see today are Translations of the Translation and not the exact translation itself. that is why Muslims prefer to read Quran in Arabic and i am sure most people -- Muslims from any corner and why even converts -- will definitely learn it in Arabic -- for it is best understood that way.

i mean it is like Zabur(Psalms), Torah and Injil(Bible) -- they are best understood in their original language.

Well, we have a lot of books for explanations, the normal person can't understand Quran alone, it's very hard for him because Quran contains a very high level of Arabic, and it contains a lot of law, inhertiance law, Prophits stories, which need a lot of explanations to understand, so we used to read the explanations to undersand, and there are a lot of explanations, and every one take the most explanation he find it sutable for him.

The Qur'an is not God inspired like the Bible is. Islam and Christianity are two separate ideas and religions.
