First off the jeep is ment to be 4x4 so no there limit to how much and how long you can use it provided that the conditions are right. Basicly what you need is a slippery condition so that when you are turning the front axle doesn't bind instead it can slide or push the tires relieving the stress on the spider gears. As far as for low is concered this should only be used when the extra torque is needed it doesn't change which wheels actually have traction just the torque and wheel speed that the vehical has. Unless you really need it always use 4 hi, if driven correctly other than towing, steep inclines or declines, and rock crawling you shouldn't need 4 low. As for the rest of the question the liberty in either configuration doesn't have the capability to chose which wheels spin you can get the limited slip rear axle and in 4x4 this will give you both rear tires and which ever front tire spins the easiest. For a vehical that can choose you would want to look at the new grand cherokees, with the quadra drive I or II system as well as trucks like the range rover, hummer I basicly you up scale 4x4's
