I have several UK landline numbers that keep calling and hanging up. When ever I call back there is no answer and no voicemail option. I have reported the issue to my service provider.

Are there any free web based services which allow you to search by a phone number to find out who is calling? There are hundreds of services for the US which do this, but I cant find any for the UK.

Oh that explains it all.

011448 is considered a special rate number. (+44.8)

You should use *44800 from a FWD phone.or call the US help line [1-866-243-4357] and ask to be connected to the UK one (guess it shouldn't be a problem for a VoIP phone company, aight!?!)

If that's not possible (or they don't want to do it), ask for a geo number in the uk to call. If it's not +44.1 or +44.2 you just keep asking!

EDIT: for the benefit of people on unlimited plans. Dialling a non geographic number is usually not included in your plan. If you have to call a UK non-geo no., try first to lookup "say no to 870" website: a lot of corresponding geo no.s are listed here!

In the UK it is actually illegal to obtain a telephone number unless implied permission is given for it to be in the public domain or a warrant is issued either to police or military intelligence to do so. Thank you once more Data Protection Act.
Hang-ups like this are often caused by a power dialler but if there's a number there it's unusual as power diallers usually call on withheld numbers. It's not clear whether these calls or to your landline or mobile from your question, but for landlines BT used to run a service which allowed you to block numbers. If it's a mobile ask your service provider about the same option.
It's a criminal offence to use the telephone to cause distress or alarm to individuals so if you know the numbers concerned give BT a ring and they should send warnings to whoever is doing it.
Finally if it is a commercial concern that's calling then go on the Telephone Preference Service. Any commercial enterprise calling you then is liable to large fines. It takes 28 days for your request to be processed.
This all assumes that you reside in the UK of course. If you're in Europe or America, similar services are provided but I don't know specific details.

Hope that's useful.

Its a sensible way to start. The site allows you to do a no cost scan simply to find out if any sort of data is in existence. A smaller analysis is done without cost. To get a detailed report its a modest payment.

You may not realize how many good reasons there are to try and find out more about the people around you. After all, whether you're talking about new friends, employees, doctors, caretakers for elderly family members, or even significant others, you, as a citizen, have a right to know whether the people you surround yourself with are who they say they are. This goes double in any situation that involves your children, which not only includes teachers and babysitters, but also scout masters, little league coaches and others. Bottom line, if you want to find out more about someone, you should perform a background check.

Reverse phone number search compiles hundreds of millions of phone book records to help locate the owner's name, location, time zone, email and other public information.

Use a reverse phone lookup to:
Get the identity of an unknown caller.
Identify an area code.
Recall the name of a person whose number you wrote down.
Identify an unfamiliar phone number that shows up on your bill.

I work for a telephone provider and if a customer wishes to know who owns a certain number, go to the site I've put below (it's free), enter the number and they will tell you about it, often if it is a company they will also provide number to reach the company direct. Also there is links on it to help you make a complaint if necessary. I know from experience that certain companies use land-line no's so people will pick up, not suspecting it's a sales call.

Every coming day there seems to be news of horrible crimes being committed to innocent people. We want you to know who these offenders are, some are living among you without your knowledge. eVerify, a criminal background search tool, will provide you that closure.

Instantly run searches and gather information about the people you interact with on a daily basis or people who live around you. You will be shocked with what you find out. The real question is, can you handle the truth?
