getting out of their collars. We thought they were chewing through them but looking closer at the collar, it is a straight clean line & looks like someone has actually cut the collars. This has happened to our dog a couple of weeks in a row. We keep buying new collars for her & each time the collar has the same exact cut in it. If she chewed it, I would think it would be ragged & torn. Plus, my pig's collar is a a harness that goes under her belly, & that's where it was cut--under her belly. It is physically impossible for her to chew through her collar, b/c she can't turn her neck in that direction.
Does anyone have any suggestions on what I can do? I'd love to simply bring my pets in the house, but I just can't. My pig used to be an inside pet, & has made herself an outside pet. She very rarely wants to come inside. So being inside pets is not an option. We take very good care of our animals, but we just moved into another house & can't afford a fence yet.

Thanks or any help.

We live in a rural area, but I'm afraid they will get hit by a car, or that whomever is cutting the collars will call animal control and get them taken away. I wish I could do something about whomever is cutting the collars, but I don't know who's doing it.

We have an underground fence, but it doesn't work with pigs, and our dog won't learn to stay in the fence.

As soon as we have the money (maybe one year from now?) we'll get a chain link fence, but until then...? Thanks in advance for any ideas.

You can request a drive-by by your local police department. Explain to them your dogs are outside and it looks like someone is cutting their collars. The police will drive by every hour or so, if they are able (they aren't leaving a bloody car-wreck to check on your dog) but they will do it.

I also suggest the camera.

And you could also buy a thicker collar--leather or even metal if you can. These are harder to cut. There is a new collar out, actually I think it's a harness, but it's made of the same material rock climbers use for their harnesses. It doesn't stretch, break, tear, and is extremely hard to cut or chew through. Check your yard and make sure they aren't getting snagged on something.

Your only other option is to purchase extra large or jumbo crates and secure them during the time you are gone. I know, sucks for the animal because it's not fair, but better safe than sorry.

Also check out your local yahoo groups Free Cycles and Cafes, maybe someone has an old fence or horse fence they can offer you.

Are your neighbors home during the day? You could ask them if they have seen anything, I wouldn't suggest out right accusing them. There is a good chance that if someone is cutting their colalrs they think they are doing a good deed. Obviously not thinking it all the way through becasue letting your pets run free all day can be dangerous to them. You should call the police, becasue they are damaging your property ( the collars) and it is wrong. Plus, giving the cops a heads up might make them drive by and at least they will know whats going on. I don't understand why they would cut the collars, seems would be just as easy to take them off. Try CraigsList.com, I've seen free fencing on there. Though I live in Mass. It doesn't have to be fabulous, just to keep them safe.

Could be a kid doing it, or an "animal lover" neighbor.
Unfortunately, some folks don't realize the danger they can be putting critters in by 'freeing' them into a strange environment.

One inexpensive answer might be to find a local farm supply store... some hardware stores like Lowes or Home Depot as well... that carries something called "Cattle Panel". This is fencing (heavy wire) that comes in 12' and 16' lengths. You use "T posts" (also available where the panels are sold) by driving them into the ground and wiring the fence to them. This makes a relatively inexpensive yard that can later be moved, removed or re-sold.

Other than that, a couple of web cams or a baby monitor might catch the culprit on film and you will know who you are dealing with. Depending on who it is and where you are, you can then either speak with them or get your local police to do so.

Try to keep in mind that whoever is doing it probably thinks they are doing the animals a 'favor' and might become a friend, if handled kindly, once they understand that you love your pets too. Good luck!

write a note in obvious bold type in a water proof cover stating exactly what you have put here. It is no business but your own whether or not you chain up your pets. As long as you take em for a run every day i dont see what the problem is. Is there any reason why you dont let your dogs in the house? If it happens again leave a second note explaining they they are causing criminal damage and you`ll take em to court. not only that they are tresspasssing on your property. stand up for your self!! and if they phone the RSPCA (im british) they will simply check that the animals are looked after. I know of no laws that state dogs cannot be tied up,. But please continue to excercise your dogs and do not allow nosy inteferers to intimidate you.

It does sound like someone is cutting the collars. You can get fenceing that is not as expencive as a chain link fence. The fence is almost like hog wire exept it is in rectangle boxes instead of square ones. I bought some of that fence to put my boxer in because my neighbor was complaining about her.

I hope I have been of some kind of help.

have someone stay over and drive your car away from your place at your usual time wearing your jacket or something and stay home with a camera. You will catch the real pig that is trying to kill your dog and pig by cutting their collars off. Nail the jerk good via the law by putting the collar on him or her. I hope you catch them soon.

Put a video camera in a window aimed at the location of the run. When you notice the collar is off, go back and look at the tape.

you could put up some cheaper fencing, we used hog fencing around here it cost 60.00 for a 100 ft roll so its alot cheaper than chain link. As far the person that is doing this to your animals it could be a neighbor that is hearing them bark when your not home, could that be a possibilty? I would ask around my neighbors if your dogs are bothering them, and if not ask them to keep an eye on your house. Good luck!!!

It sounds like you need to put a camera on your runs to find out who is cutting these collars and harnesses.

Someone thinks they are doing a good deed probably.
