as a former muslim i have read in depth the meaning of quran. it cannot be taken out of context, coz since when was it ever right to beat the women.

you can say what u want but it says in quran that men can beat there women.
Quran (4:34) orders a man to beat his wife if she doesn't obey him?
Quran 4:34: Men are the maintainers of women because Allah has made some of them to excel others and because they spend out of their property; the good women are therefore obedient, guarding the unseen as Allah has guarded; and (as to) those on whose part you fear desertion, admonish them, and leave them alone in their sleeping places and beat them; then if they obey you, do not seek a way against them; surely Allah is High, Great.

As a women, yes I think it is wrong to beat us! But from a religous stand point, I can't argue down your faith. I think someone was a little twisted when he wrote that because a Woman disobeys, she should be beaten. But then again, men do like control...

Here, quran shows different levels of correcting the situation if a wife is trying to spoil the relationship between her and her husband with no good reason:

[Shakir 4:34] Men are the maintainers of women because Allah has made some of them to excel others and because they spend out of their property; the good women are therefore obedient, guarding the unseen as Allah has guarded; and (as to) those on whose part you fear desertion, admonish them, and leave them alone in the sleeping-places and beat them; then if they obey you, do not seek a way against them; surely Allah is High, Great.

[Shakir 4:35] And if you fear a breach between the two, then appoint judge from his people and a judge from her people; if they both desire agreement, Allah will effect harmony between them, surely Allah is Knowing, Aware.

When you fear the woman desertion, you have to correct the situation in different steps of actions:

1st step : Admonish them.

If no improvement:

2nd step: Leave them alone in the sleeping-places: To give them a time to think about it.

If no improvement:

3rd step:
Beat her: Here beating is something symbolic and not to make bruises or broken bones for her. Scholars are saying that beating them with “ Siwak” whitch is 10 Cm long stick (Used by Muslims to clean their teeth – It’s like a tooth brush) So the word here is not as you want show by exaggeration.

If no improvement and you fear break up:

4th step:
Appoint judge from his people and a judge from her people; if they both desire agreement, Allah will effect harmony between them, surely Allah is Knowing, Aware.

All the steps shown here, is to discourage the divorce between the couple by doing all the means you can before that, including the symbolic beating as mentioned above.

A word for you:

When a women commit adultery at the 1st time , she wish if all women on earth do the same. I think you have the same syndrome and you wish if all Muslims convert from Islam. I feel sorry for you.

This is all wrong. Because the quran also says in the quran that if u were to kill or hit any other person then u would be hitting the whole of mankind. GOD doesnt like this . PLus there are many different types of interpretation of the holy books of this world. There can easily be an error in the translation. After all many people interpret the bible in different ways. For example some people think that god is inthis universe, some think that he is outside it and he doesnt have any power in what goes on or that all he has is the power of love... take ur pick

your statement has upset me deeply.
untill i read marissa's answer.
the Prophet Muhammad saws, asked the men who beat women, how can they beat them during the day then lie with them at night? the Prophet Muhammad saws, never hit a woman. the Prophet Muhammad saws, bannished the widespread practice of burying there unwanted baby daughters alive.

You have been very foolish indeed in your interpretations of The Book.
The Prophet Muhammad saws, also said those that are not good to their wives are not of us.

May i also point out that Islam is a peaceful faith but it means submission. It is a right for a muslim to defend themselves and their families when under attack, these so called terrorists have watched their families be tortured and murdered there homes flattened their children have been shot and their plight has been ignored by the world.
tell me who would stand by and watch idly their child be tortured?
or would you fight?
i personally would fight to the death.
May i also point out that Isalm is the fastest growing religion on earth today, why? because ppl are beginning to see past the propaganda the western world is delivering to the ppl.

Another reason why i don't follow any religion. A woman should not have to obey any man why can she not have her own opinion without the fear of being smacked? i agree with Mary smith if you touched me you would be sorry id make sure you never were able to raise your hands again. Any male who hits a woman is a pathetic excuse for a man

You took it wrong...none of the spouse is allowed to beat the other...Husband is allowed to punish her only when she does a sever mistake...in todays world even in western society man beat women...Read bible and you will see in bible men are given power over women and he can decide her fate... in todays world we may disagree with it but a dominent person is necessary to keep the family in ordin...he may punish slightly but not be violent...religion teaches us best principals of good life,so do not confuse ppl with words or telling that islam is bad...

You may have been a former Muslim, but you were never a knowledgeable Muslim. If you were knowledgeable, you would know that it is never right to "beat" anyone. A husband may strike his wife lightly, as a symbolic gesture, if he does not want to divorce her but she refuses to have sex with him. He is not allowed to strike her in such a way that it even leaves a red mark or causes her psychological distress.

If I was with you and you beat me you would be one sorry man. Totally wrong to beat a woman. Does it give you an superiority complex.

Violence is wrong and whoever uses violence instead of intellect and logical reasoning, lacks intelligence. If you need to threaten another person physically to win an argument, you have already lost it.

Wrong, plain and simple no.
