The best car for a 17 yr old is a toy one - they are not mature enough to drive a car safely...this is born out by the fact that their insurance premiums are so high.

And lets face it - if you think ANY car SAVES gas, you are seriously deluded, and should not be allowed to drive due to your mental deficiency!

I would say something a bit junkier since you are new to driving. No offense, but you probable would not find it too hard to total a brand new Ferrari or something as it is the same with most other teenage drivers. Perhaps a 99 Honda Accord with 50k miles or something. One of those would probable cost about $1500 right now. This car would be for two purposes. One, to practice driving and even if you do crash it up then at least it was a junky car and you can get it repaired or just get another car for 1000 dollars; 500 dollars cheaper. And two, to get you around. When you think you are ready to buy a real nice car, after at least a year I would say. So anyway, good luck and I hope this helps.

I told my son that we were going to get a used Cadillac or Lincoln for him. First, it's huge, so there's lots of metal around him to protect him if he gets in an accident. Second, as a luxury car, it was probably well maintained when it was new, so hopefully it will not have many problems to deal with. Third, it gets about 7 miles per gallon, so he'll never do drugs, because he'll spend all his money on gas.

But we gave him my old van when I got a new truck instead.

So when you narrow your search to 2-3 possibilities, you can check to see what the guys at cartalk have to say about those models, if they've test drove them.

You need a sturdy car with seat belts and wear them. I got my daughter a matrix, good on gas, good safety rating and a great car to start college in.

Go in for one of the cheap toyotas or hondas. maybe a toyota echo or a honda civic... dont go in for any american muscle or pony cars as they are costly to run and expensive to maintain. more than that, they are way too powerful. i still remember the day i crashed my chevy camaro straight into my neighbour's car while trying to park into my drive way at 35 miles an hour.....so take care dude... god speed

It depends on if it's a girl or a boy. If it's a boy...make sure it's something shiny and pretty to impress the girls, but also something they can do some REALLY dumb stuff in and not get hurt. If it's a girl...a huge trunk is key, the more room in it the better.

You need a big, heavy car so when you get into an accident you won't be hurt.

But the rubbermaid cars....Saturns are REAL GOOD. Check them out. They are built real sound.
