We have just moved to a new house which has a hot tub with it. My Q is, is it suitable to let my little boy go in it (he's just turned 3).
He is having his birthday party on saturday & wants to go in it with his friends?
Is this a good idea?
Lots of love Laura xx

If so what should I ask the other mums to bring with them in the way of clothes.
The same as if they were swimming?

BAD BAD BAD idea! The hot tubs have little vents that suck in water for the jets, and they are pretty powerful. My leg got kind of sucked onto ours, and I realized my son can never go in there, because it was powerful enough to do damage to his skin. Also, I have seen documentaries that kids can get stuck to them and then can't pull themselves up out of the water. Not that THAT extreme would happen, but just avoid any problems. You don't want a kid getting a little arm or something stuck.

If you do want to allow your son into the hot tub, turn down the temperature and let it be a parent/child type time. You are asking for trouble making a party for small children in it, even if it is a small area. There are just too many potential things that can go wrong from health issues of each child, to the water's Ph balance, to too many very young children supervised anyway but one-on-one. Though, if there is an adult with each child willing and wanting to hot tub in luke warm water then go for it.
Just please think about what the risks are and compare them to the benefits. I am sure you will use good judgement. Have a great time whatever you do.

I heard that hot tubs are not good for kids- but no reason was given. I assume the temperature? If you know the kids are going to go into the hot tub, just make sure the temperature is not as high.
I would say swimming suits and towels. If there is a safety issue, I am sure other parents will let you know. I would also keep a VERY close eye on them at all times( obviously).

ill never forget watching a real life programme where a childs hair got caught in the vent at the bottom of a hot tub. They were unable to get her out and she drowned. Personally Id say no. A group of 3 year olds jumping and splashing around in a hot tub. Thats just asking for an accident. Im sure they will be just as happy munching on goodies, playing games or watching a dvd.

Hot tubs are not good for young children. They are a breeding ground for bacteria and young children's immune systems are still developing. They could get very sick, or worse, they could get burns from the temperature. Also, another thing is the moisture level from a hot tub, it restricts breathing. Where a normal child would have 100% oxygen.. in a hot tub, this is decreased to around 94% , which doesn't seem like a big difference, but this level is near asthmatic.. and is not good for a kid.

Kids and hot tubs never mix.

Bad idea Laura - I asked the same question at my local gym as there is a hot tub there and my 4 year old daughter wanted to go in it. They do not recommend that anyone under the age of 8 uses hot tubs as it raises their body temperature too high and can cause problems.

Hope this helps! xxx

We have a hot tub and my girls love it. It might be advisable to lower the setting to bath water temperature. Someone mentioned about the suction power of the pump but ours is not a problem, best check yours out on full power by putting your hand near it. If you only use the air bubbles then this isn't a problem. Swimming costumes are ideal.
Notes Learnt from experience.
1, don't let them play with the settings
2, don't let them stick there heads under the water (hair in vents etc..)
3, make sure they all go to the toilet first.
4, don't top up the chemicals to much before they use it as the fumes from chlorine can make there eyes stream.
Have a fun day.

If you go to a public hot tub area, they always say kids under 12 are not allowed in it - same should be at home. And if he wants a "water" birthday, take them to a pool instead with help from other parents, at least this way the hot water from a hot tub won't scold their young bodies. And if an accident happens (water scolds / drowning / etc.), what are you going to tell the parents who entrust you with their children?

Safety first, so I'd plan something else for them to do on his birthday.

2 problems with hot tubs and young kids:

1) they can be deep enough to be over the kid's head. Obviously dangerous.

2) little people can get overheated a lot faster than big people. So if the kid is going in, keep the temperature low.

I would think it would be okay for your son to go in it with your or your hubby. But I don't think having a bunch of young kids in it together is a good idea - I can just see the rough housing going on and someone accidently getting hurt or drowning just as you turn away for one second to cut the cake or something. It's just not worth the risk! And do you really want to be liable for that if something were to happen? Not worth it!! Find some better form of entertainment at the party. Good luck!
