It is pretty much impossible to give any info as you do not say what type of hernia.
If you add what type it is you may get some useful advice.

My son had hernia before he turned one. I bought the smallest supporter briefs I could find and had him wear it until he turned two. We did not have an operation because it reolved by itself. The doctor advised us to just see to it that it does not bulge when he cries or whatever strenous activity that may cause the hernia to bulge again. So the supporter helped and he is now 5 years old. Just make sure that the supporter waistband is fit enough to hold in the hernia. I sew velcros on the waist band so I could tighten it.

keep the hernia covered and padded and try to keep the child as still as possible. baby advil should do alot for the swelling and pain. but remember to read the dosage.

Don't let him become excited so that he starts yelling and strains his nerves.Make him were a 'langoti' always.
