I'm not particularly interested in losing weight (I'm 5'4" and wiegh just under 9 stone/124lbs). I have an hourglass figure and I can fit into some size 10 jeans but usually opt for size 12 because the size 10 tends to cut into my flabby sides which I think is a little crass.

I'm not looking to become stick thin, just to make my bum and thighs a little firmer, with the flab on my sides not so, well, flabby! :)

Localised fat loss is a myth. So if you have lots of excess fat in an area, you need to do cardio to remove it. Sadly, fat loss happens slower in some parts than others.

It souns liek this isn't so much of a problem for you though. To tone yourstomach, crunches of all types. Also, lie on your back, lift your legs and point your toes at the ceiling. Use your stomach muscles to lift your bum off the ground and try to touch the ceiling with your toes. Do about 20 of these each day.

Try also doing "superman" lifts. Lie on your stomach, arms out in front. Then lift arms and legs, curving the back, like you're super...ermm... supergirl. Hold relax and repeat.

Cycle, cycle, cycle.
Cycling just a little bit, like to college, or to work, or for a few hours over the weekend, will tone you're legs, thighs and bum.
It's also a great cardio workout, and will keep fat levels all over the body low.
If you don't like cycling, try some "ballet kicks" at home.
Lift you're leg at a 90 degree angle in front of you, and try to hold for 10 counts. Next lift it at a 90 degree angle to the side, 10 counts, and repeat on the other leg. Over time you will be able to hold you're leg up for longer and longer, as the muscle gets stronger and stronger.
Good luck on firming up.

I'm in the same boat. For some reason most of my body weight is carried in my thighs and butt! I have been doing a lot of leg workouts lately, like going up and down a flight of stairs for 10 minuets (YOU CAN BURN 100 CALORIES THAT WAY, yeah in 10 minuets!) I would just say plenty of leg work-outs and cardio put into your workout plan :) Good luck!

Try doing squats , have your feet shoulder width apart , put your hands behind your head and slowly lower yourself down then raise yourself back up , repeat as many times as you can , each time you do this you should manage to do more than the previous time , even if it's only one more each time and you should notice your thighs and butt toning up nicely if done regularly , you might want to add a bit of cycling to that as that works wonders on the legs in quite a short time .

Swimming. Breast stroke is good, or horseriding (but I would say that wouldnt I?). Practice your martial arts kicks really really slowly. Those high kicks really hurt when you do them as slow as you can bear. And hold your side kicks out for a few seconds more than you can bear. Dont forget to warm up properly and stretch for those.

Personally I prefer the swimming option as people cant see when you are sweating. I dont like sweating. Not in public anyway.

Take time once a 1 week to plan out and purchase meals and snacks so you're prepared whenever hunger strikes.

Honestly, everyone in my office is now hooked on the Miracle Ball Method. It lenghtens and tones your muscles using gravity not force. It is truly amazing! You can get it at Amazon.com. Or just google the Miracle Ball Method. I'm pretty sure it is exactly what you are looking for!
