It sometime happen, this might be due to he/she might be having a bad dream or a nightmare, they will actually grunt their teeth. Beside that, it also might due the person having a bad health (referring he/she is very heating from the inside of the body ~ referring Chinese traditional way saying it)

Grinding teeth in a toddler especially in their sleep is sign that the child has worms. Get a worming medicine. If this keeps on then it could well be that the child is a teeth grinder and may well grow out of it, but worm the child first because seriously it is a symptom.

Just been reading some of the responses. I found out about the teeth grinding and worms thing from the pharmacist. Other symptoms are restless sleep and bed wetting also the usual itching bottom and an inability to sit still.

I just asked a dentist about this. My niece(3) and nephew (2)
do this and she said that they would just grow out of it. Usually when adults have this problem they can use a night guard or an occlusal guard but we all know that little ones probably wouldn't keep these in their mouths at night

If you mean grind teeth it is normal especially in toddlers. They tend to grow out of it.

You dont grunt teeth, you grind them, but dont worry it is quite normal, and it also helps to develope the muscle's in the jaw.

I don't understand why the previous respondants think that its nothing serious. My niece (9years) also used to do that but she has since been taken to a dentist & got braces to help her. I think its something to do with the teeth & the way they grew. After that, I don't think she will be doing that again.

Why don't you do the same?

Ooo, never heard the worm thing. My dentist says I grind my teeth because I am anxious about something, when I say I'm not he doesn't beleive me!!!

Probably coz they used pacifiers too much. With the pacifiers they grind their gums on it while sleeping. Probably a habit.

There's an old wives tale that says its caused by worms! Intestinal worms are common in young children so maybe there is some truth in it.
