It can stay dormant for many years. However, the first outbreak usually occurs within 2-21 days after being infected with the herpes virus. It can be transmitted without a sore being present but usually spreads from direct contact with a sore or kissing a person that has a sore.

A cold sore is a form of herpes, yes. Most are caused from stress, but can be picked up from kissing someone with an active sore. Once you get them, you will continue breaking out at different times throughout your life. There are great meds on the market now, over the counter, that can take them away in just a few days. I use antibiotic cream on them at night, also. Sorry to hear it, they are more than a bother than a sickness.

If you have the symptoms of a cold sore you should begin to treat it with a topical cream before it becomes a full on sore, and starts to break open and form a scab. When I feel one starting to come on I put on Blistex cream a few times a day and it usually will go away before it breaks out into a festering sore. Don't be kissing anybody if you have one or you will spread it to them.

When you get a cold sore, that , like you said, means you have herpes. You will have it for the rest of your life. Sometimes you'll get a cold sore, sometimes you won't. But, you'll always have it inside of you.
