BROWNSVILLE — A judge denied bond today to a man accused of bringing his 14-year-old stepdaughter across the Texas-Mexico border illegally to get an education, but instead holding her captive and sexually abusing her.

The girl, who suffered "substantial bodily injury" during her approximate two months in captivity, has been returned to her mother in Matamoros, Mexico, police said.

The girl's mother approached a U.S. Customs officer on Oct. 2 on an international bridge near her home in Matamoros because she was worried that the girl's stepfather wasn't allowing any family to visit her.

The girl was found the next day in a locked trailer in Brownsville. Police issued a warrant for the stepfather, Juan Miguel Medrano, and a tip led them to a relative's trailer home late Saturday where he was found hiding in a closet.

Magistrate Phil Bellamy denied bond for Medrano, a U.S. citizen, today.

The girl, who is not being identified because she is a juvenile victim of sexual abuse, told detectives she had moved in with Medrano about six months ago but had been kept in the trailer, sometimes with her ankle chained, for about the past two months, arrest affidavits show.

She said Medrano sexually abused her and sometimes got her drunk. She said she once woke up bound to a bed by her wrist and ankles, unsure whether she'd been abused. The detectives said they found evidence of bondage and of "substantial bodily injury" due to sexual assault.

Brownsville police Lt. James Paschall said the girl required medical treatment but that he could not comment further.

The girl had crossed the border illegally from Matamoros, Mexico, across the Rio Grande from Brownsville, and was to live with Medrano while she attended school in Brownsville.

Police told the Brownsville Herald she was found in the trailer "delirious and not in her right mind."

The girl was housed briefly in a women's shelter before being returned to her mother in Mexico. It was unclear whether her mother still was married to Medrano.

Officials were trying to get her asylum to return to Brownsville as a crime victim during the investigation, Paschall said.

Medrano is charged with aggravated sexual assault of a child, unlawful restraint and endangerment, and child abandonment.

Aggravated sexual assault of a child, the most serious charge, is punishable by five to 99 years in prison and up to a $10,000 fine.

Illegal immigrants are especially vulnerable to sexual assault and domestic violence, said Meredith Linsky, an attorney with the South Texas Pro Bono Asylum and Representation Project.

"We certainly see a lot of sexual abuse and domestic violence perpetrated, " she said. "It's important that this come to light for the public safety as well as the humanitarian aspect of these young and often defenseless victims

Death is too quick for those bastards! I think they should be put in the general population in prisons for them to get REAL justice at the hands of the other inmates... they DO NOT like child molesters! Oh, they'll make sure that he gets what he deserves! Death is too quick. Let him become the cell-block whore for those other deviants in there that will surely gang up on him and take "turns" with him!

WE, as a society, are at fault for this. Why? Because we do not make the sissy, limp-wrist politicians responsible for passing legislation stand up and pass laws that ensure they NEVER get released to abuse another child or woman again! And, also, they should be made to learn a trade and work to pay for their meals and medical attention. To hell with recreational pursuits. To hell with radios, televisions, etc. Prisons shouldn't be a vacation for predators! Let them work or get the dogshit kicked out of them! I have more respect for an embezzler or bank robber or even a burglar than I do for a child molester or sexual predator, which I think are the lowest form of vermin that exists!

I blame those sissy, limp-wrist politicians that say that physical castration is "cruel and unusual" when what those predators do is REALLY cruel and unusual... maybe if judges, all defense lawyers, district attorneys and probation officers and those on parole boards should spend at least 2 weeks in lockup in prisons as part of their "training" so that they get to hear them brag and laugh of their crimes and what they got away with... and let them share a cell with a child molester or a sexual predator, too! The judges, parole board members and parole officers have no idea of what the citizens must life with; they out of touch with reality!

He sounds just like those creeps on "To Catch a Predator." If you're smart you'll stay out of those kinds of chat rooms. And don't believe what random guys say. He can tell you anything. He's probably closer to 42 and has a thing for young teenage girls. Be very careful. Don't give out personal info, email, phone no., school or address.

Life behind bars is too good for a piece of crap like that. They should delay the trial for at least a year. Then throw him in with the general population, the lifers- murders, rapists, etc.

After several months of having his head slammed against the sink as the guys take their turns with him, one of them should be bribed to do him like they did Jeffrey Dahmer.

It would save the taxpayers the cost of a trial, the cost of keeping him alive for the next 50 or so years, and spare that girl from having to face him in the courtroom. She's been through enough already.

While I agree with virtually all the sentiments regarding the vileness and stupidity of child molestors and sexual predators, honestly I think capital punishment is too good for these sick bastards.
Subjecting them to endless physical (all sorts of physical abuse), psychological and emotional (threatening their families and treating them without any human dignity) torture followed by banishment to Antartica or some other hell-hole oughta suit these animals (a.k.a. make them beg for death, but deny them that). They brought eternal pain to their victims, so its only fair that they suffer eternal pain as well.

To get an education?? What the hell does that mean? She got an education alright. How dumb is this girl's mother? Who sends their daughter off to live with her stepfather like that?
And yes he should go to jail for the rest of his life. And prisoners like this shouldn't get television and internet access etc. and basically treated like they're in a free hotel.

I agree with everyone 100 percent. I think he should rot in jail. No matter what race or where you come from sexual predators are scum of the earth and should be death with accordingly to the fullest extent of the law

I agree with you... Life with no parole is appropriate for a man who would do such harm to a child.
Maybe, in prison, he could learn a few things about sexual abuse!

He should get what any person who commits such a crime gets. Considering the mother let an unrelated man take her daughter in this way, she should also get locked up...

Nope. I think he should get six months in jail, with the most horny cell mate in the country. Then, when HIS six months of sexual "fun" is up, he needs to be led straight to good ole Sparky.

Life in prison would be too good for him, this man should NEVER be allowed to walk the streets again. Publicly Castrate and then hang him, that's my punishment for this freak. Let's hope he doesn't just get 6 mos. in jail and probation.
