how do i remove the carriage from an old typewriter to try and fix it?

a 1949 olivetti typewriter

At one end of the carriage, you should see a latch which holds the carriage onto the typewriter. Flip this up and lift the carriage up.

First take the carriage out. Then throw it out. Then throw out the typewriter. Then buy the oldest computer you can find, and it will be over a half century better than your stinky typewriter.
