Really don't know. They probably do though, it's more of a culture than anything is it not?

I wondered about this when the book "Mystic River" first came out, and did a little research. I tried to do more when the film came out, but I didn't turn up much.

The Westies are still around, apparently, but they aren't as visible or as powerful as they once were. I guess they still control parts of New York, but they don't have the reputation they once had, and they don't do business with the Italian Mafia the way they once did.

Several big cities in the Northeast, especially Boston, do have Irish gangs, but they are pretty much bush league, and mainly concentrate on just controlling their own little pieces of territory and doing stuff like running all the drugs or prostitution or other crime in their tiny area of influence.

The main impression I got from my research is that they (the Irish gangs) did a lot of business with the Mafia in their heyday. One of the things they were most useful for was hiring out as contract killers from the outside because I guess it's pretty hard to have someone killed in the Mafia if you are part of that organization. Because law enforcement has tried so hard to stamp out the Mafia, and has, arguably, done a pretty good job, the Irish gangs, both the known ones and the small anonymous ones, have faded back into the woodwork to do their business in the dark, where the spotlights that shine toward the Mafia will not reach them.

I did find out that Russian "Mafia" style organizations are on the rise and have been for quite some time. They aren't limited to actual Russians, but tend to comprise people from Eastern Europe in general. They are also mainly active in the Northeast. They are considered a bigger threat by law enforcement. From what I was able to find out, they don't do a lot of business with the Italians if they can help it, but they are interested in moving in and taking up some of the "business" opportunities that have become available since the other crime groups have fallen apart. Apparently, they are pretty much based in Brighton Beach, New York (which I associate with Neil Simon, not with crime!).

The Russian Mafia is very big in the former Soviet Union, and exercises a lot of control in some places. They have been in place for a long time, and are well-organized, so their move to the US after the collapse of the USSR kind of makes sense in a way. I read somewhere that their three main sources of income are illegal weapons (lots of stuff floating around Russia now that's up for grabs), drugs (they have drug connections with the Middle East, and also with the gangs from Latin America), and people smuggling (helping people who cannot otherwise enter the US get in).

The Russian Mafia is of concern to American law enforcement for a couple of reasons, if I remember correctly. They are pretty secretive, and don't live like royalty, like the Mafia did, which makes them blend into the background more. Also, they are a lot more violent than the Mafia ever was. The Mafia had a whole set of internal laws and rules dictating who could do what, and I guess the Russians are a lot less organized, which leads to a lot more people making decisions to wreak havoc at will.

You know, you hear these silly stories about how when the Italian Mafia controlled Las Vegas, it was a very nice, clean and safe place. They didn't like to make a mess where they were doing business. I guess since they've pretty much been put out of commission, other groups have stepped in to take their place. I read this thing by one guy in law enforcement and he said that he'd rather go back to the good old Italian Mafia days because those guys had a code of honor, and they kept their subordinates in line, and the new gangs that have taken up the vacuum left by the Cosa Nostra, like the Latin, Russian and Asian gangs, aren't nearly as nice, polite, or honorable.

Go figure...

i think of that the classic peoples weren't virtually as hung up on racial classifications as we are right this moment. it seems they defined themselves by potential of their united states and not their race. The term "Caucasian" is new in background, in easy terms on condition that around the previous due 1700's. i do no longer think of they could have suggested that they are white, because of the certainty they confirmed themselves diverse from lighter skinned peoples. From analyze I certainly have finished, it seems that the 1st Egyptian dynasties have been darkish sufficient and had advantageous factors that could classify them as "black", even nevertheless that classification of defining people like that did no longer exist back then. They have been conquered by potential of Greeks, Romans, Arabs, and are actually a multiracial people. I do locate it thrilling that the way they styled their hair with braids and extensions remains finished throughout Africa and by potential of folk of African descent around the international all the way down to on the instant time.

The tentacles of organized crime sometimes is world wide. I'm sure you have heard of the drug cartels, which have connections in all major countries.Mob people are NOT stupid, they try to operate low key, so they don't have ego problems like young inexperienced thugs who are out to win some glory for themselves by bragging about how bad they are.
