Timezones are used to make sure there is a standardized time throughout the world. Greenwich, England in the United Kingdom is the time zone Greenwich mean Time where are time in the world is based in reference to.
Eastern time zone is for the Eastern US and it is GMT-5 meaning it is 5 hours behind the Greenwich mean time (GMT) in UK which is the standard for time. New york City is in Eastern time. This means when it is 8AM in New York, in England it is 1PM in the afternoon. Central time is GMT-6 ( 6 hours behind GMT) Chicago and St. Louis and Dallas are in Central Time. Mountain Time is GMT-7. Denver is in Mountain Time. Finally Pacific time is GMT-8 and Los Angeles and Seattle are in Pacific time. So when it is 5AM in Los Angeles, it is 6AM in Denver, 7AM in Chicago and 8AM in New York and again 1PM in England. Other countries have time zones too. Finally Daylight savings time is when some areas change the time in the summer to have longer days.

Eastern Time Zone is the easternmost states, most of Florida up to Ohio and the states in between and east of them.
Central Times Zone includes Arkansas, Oklahoma, etc.
Mountain Time Zone includes Montana, Wyoming, etc.
Pacific Time Zone includes the west coast states, California, Oregon, Washington, etc.
