actually this was not said as a means to attack religious beliefs
but as a means to help people remember that we are strong and can do things ourself
infact if you think of God as your father which i know many do
then would a parent praise a child more for doing something through their own determination and strength

You made a good point. If atheists do not believe in god then who indeed delivered them? Could it be that they didn't need god, or could it be that god helps and loves us all regardless?

Most anyone has a certain amount of will power if you will. In some it is stronger than others. If a Christian like myself says he has been delivered by God from smoking or any other unwanted habit,
that means He prayed and asked God for Divine Intervention. I know it had to be supernatural in my case, because I tried to quit and couldn't. However I'm sure there are any number of people who claim not to believe in a higher power that have given up smoking or other unwanted habits.

With most things it is a case of God helps those who help themselves. So if a person wants to stop smoking they can often do it using will power alone, or with various aids available to them. In addition a Christian has God who can help them if it is something that is good for them and they really want. In some cases someone who has not had a faith in God has been changed to a belief in God because God has for example stopped them smoking.

I heard of a smoker, who did not believe in God, who wanted to give up smoking. He had a Christian friend that said he would pray the God would stop this person from smoking. The smoker did not believe him and after the Christian had prayed for him he went away and tried to have a smoke. Every time he tried to smoke after that he was violently sick and soon became convinced that God had done this and he became a Christian as a result.

Thanks for allowing me to answer as I am a Muslim. Islam is based on free will and accountability. Although smoking was not known during the time of Prophet Muhammad and the revelation of Quran, there is a rule in Islam called 'Qeyas', as in drawing conclusions through comparing situations. This means that wine is haram, and since smoking has the same effect as wone - destroying health - then it is haram too. And this - Qeyas - is used so that we know where Islam stands from new things in modern life.

However, knowing that smoking is haram, does not prevent some muslims from smoking. This is their choice and they are held accountable for it. No one 'delivers them' from smoking or anything else but themselves.

By the way, you are very sweet, considerate and polite. I wish there were more people like you on this platform.

Thank you :)

The Lord delivered me from smoking. Sometimes people can stop themselves, but for me, I have to say I was a total slave to it. I tried many times to stop but couldnt. And then one day, I went to church (I had already been a born again Christian for 2 years at that time) and was puffing away in my car with NO inclination to give it up, although I had told the Lord that I had failed to stop myself and I gave it to Him to help me stop. He spoke to me that day in church and I told Him that I would give Him until 3pm that day to perform a miracle and if not, I would start again at 3. Well, 3pm came and went and I have not ever smoked since and that was 4 years ago my friend.

I lacked the willpower to do it myself, and my God graciously answered my prayer and delivered me from my slavery to cigararettes.

Thank You Jesus for what You have done for me because You love me, and because You are an awesome God.

Hi, I'm a Christian. When people say God delivered them from an addiction, they probably mean that they credit God as having helped or enabled them to overcome that addiction. When non-theists overcome an addiction, God may have helped them, too, but they do not acknowledge Him as having had anything to do with it.

I believe God helps people in many ways, Christian and non-Christian, with or without our acknowledgement of that help.

I am a christian and proud to be called one. It takes faith to overcome any hurdles in life. And in christianity it states that if you have faith as small as a mustard seed then you can move a mountain. So for that who says that the Lord delivered them from smoking, it's because they had that faith to believe that they can be delivered and it happened.

By the statement, God helped me we mean God gave us the strength and determination to give up. Not that God personally came down and removed the bud from ones mouth. As long as you are open and receptive God can help you to do anything through his grace.

The reality of God doesn't change just because someone doesn't believe in Him. God can deliver anyone He chooses of anything He chooses. Remember that God works in mysterious ways.

you mean quitting smoking?
If you do, the Lord has nothing to do with it, you get into it with free will and then you pay hell to get out but you do it by yourself.

I guess people who are Christian believe the Lord gave them strenghth to do it..I dont know but its more a personal type thing rather than religious. Then again it would depend on how religious one is!
