Sure why not. I have done it for the past 3 yrs with someone at work because we are very sociable talk to each other allot at lunch. She is married. but wait we are friends she helped me through rough times when my father was passing away I helped her when her husband was in the hospital. I also sent her a not too expensive gift when I left there but still send cards gifts for her birthday or Christmas.
Hope this helps you Anna it does not cross lines if that is your hidden question too.

Generally if you are friends outside of work it will be fine. A good rule of thumb for deciding this is: have you been to each other's houses? If the answer is no, you should confine your gift to something consumable (flowers, chocolates, scent) and not too expensive. It is terribly bad manners to give a valuable gift in the absence of a justifying relationship. If you don't really know her very well and are at risk of being accused of harrassment in today's big brother environment, I should think flowers are the safest option. Or you could make one of those charity donations where you get a gift card saying what you donated, eg a goat etc. I can't imagine that anyone could take exception to that.

It depends on what the present is, how it is given, and who the male is.
