Whose morals would be taught? Sounds like a boring class to me.
I think local laws and morals should be taught by parents; what if school taught different morals than children? Children should not be put in the position to choose between being loyal to society and being loyal to their family. The role of academics is to prepare children for the intellectual roles society has in place for them; that is, to go on to college/trade school and/or to have a minimum education to have a decent job. Morals depict social boundaries and people with different income levels, religious beliefs, and different cultural origins have developed different social boundaries. To try to unify them is undo able.

One could argue that a minimum set of morals could be taught in schools; but really that is already the case. There are countless times in school that we all remember the teacher chewing out a particular student for not paying attention/following directions, but that is really them trying to teach us how to operate in hierarchical social systems (to listen to your boss/do what your boss says). On top of that, there are "laws" associated with every school, and students learn very early on that there are things you can do and things you must never do.

So the answer to your question is that they already do teach some morals, but it is in a different context than the one you suggest and is set up to maximize social worth by leaving room for diversity.

Okay, well everyone has been preaching that morals should be taught in school and some people have even had the presence of mind to say that teachers are just the enforcers while parents should be teaching those things. You can say that parents should be doing a lot of things but the fact of the matter is that lots of parents out there didn't even want to have children in the first place and are unlikely to change. Well I believe that religion, english and extracurriculars are most important to teach in schools. Even in a public school teaching about a variety of different reigions gives children a look at different cultures and, if taught properly, can give many lessons on morals and respect. As a child learns english and literature they expand their vocabulary and read more. By reading more you can get many different insights on people and the world today. You expand your mind and you learn so much, whatever it is you read. Extracurriculars (art, music, gym) allow one to express themselves, release pent up emotions and these unforced subjects allow students to enjoy themselves. Children can open up their minds and lives through these classes (music is food for the soul-and other such cliches). And in the very least they keep kids off the streets and getting into drugs..things like that.

Obviously, you should teach children first about morality- it is the human concept between good and evil. Your childrens behaviour will depend on how you raised them based on your moral teaching. Although Science is also important but that they will learn soon.

Though I agree that morals should come first. It should not come from a religious source since religions tend to slant their morality.
