People do pick up hitch hikers, in England it is commonly lorry drivers that will pick them up, mainly because they are going a distance and because they like some company. I think years ago it wasn't such a bad thing for anybody to do as people were more genuine but in todays society you read such awful things about people being murdered or attacked. Nothing against anyone hitch hiking but the person that picks them up could be the weirdo, its a two way thing. Although I can sympathise with the poor people hitching a ride when its freezing cold and raining and my heart goes to them as you drive past safety I feel is the most important thing and would not suggest for anyone to stop.

Yes . Used to, ( still very occasionally )hitch my self so what goes around comes around.

Applying some logic If you where a crazed killer:

Option 1 Stand by the side of the road for hours on end in any weather on the off chance that you can over come who ever picks you up???? and they are the type of person you want to attack.

Option 2 Leave your house (shelter whatever) and attack the first victim that fits the profile you are going for.

I still hitch from time to time and it depends what part of the country (UK) that you are in as to whether people will pick you up.

Down in Cornwall they will during summer season plenty of lifts off surfers that is possibly the best time and place. The worst place is Luton never been picked up there once.

You often get picked up by people who have hitched themselves and you are more likely to get picked up if you are with a girl or at least one other person. People tend not to pick up lone hitchers.

You are also less likely to get picked up if you have not shaved or look particually scruffy. People are generally pretty generous and they buy you food, give you ciggarettes and are generally quite nice.

LOL, Neogriff! I am a woman and used to go camping by myself out in the desert. I make it a policy to never pick up hitch hikers under any circumstances, however one time I felt I had to, and it was alright. It was getting toward dusk, there was a thunderstorm with lightening all around and I was in a very remote location heading for a camping spot so I could get my tent pitched before it got dark. I saw a small car buried up to its belly in the sand and a man in a fairly nice business suit standing by the side of the road and waving. I slowed down and I could see tears streaming down his face. I stopped and he told me he had decided to take a relaxing drive to the lake after work and his car got so buried in the sand that he was completely stuck. He was completely alone and it was getting dark with lightening and he was scared to death. I picked him up and drove him to a nearby Indian reservation which had a 24-hour towing service. ( A lot of people got stuck out there). There was no one there but the door was open. I dropped him off in front and told him I had to leave to get somewhere in time. He was grateful, but I'm hoping he found help and didn't have to spend the night there.

I used to do it all the time, as I sometimes had to hitch a lift myself on a few occasions. Wouldn't do it now though, I might pick up women, as they are in the minority. Few women hitchhike for obvious reasons

yea, i would never.. but i feel bad when i pass some people. but you never know these days...

and basically everyone has a cell phone, AND they could always just walk to the nearest gas station phone or pay phone.

i'm a young female, so i would never pick up a hitchhiker, even if they were a woman... and that being said, i also would never get in the car with someone who tried to pull over and help me..
i'm not skinny, but i'm not a 6'5'' UFC fighter either!

i keep my phone with me at all times!

I drive a moped (motor scooter) on a Greek island. Of course, I pick up any singles looking for a lift. Unless they are old people carrying large parcels.
I have noticed, however, that when I want a lift it takes longer now than it did 7 years ago when the island had half the population.

My friend is a continental lorry driver. He was in america driving down a long dark road when there was a report on the radio of a psycho killer roaming around the area he was in. It was pitch black, there was no one for miles when suddenly he saw a hitch hiker on the road. He was shitting his pants but picked the guy up anyway. Turns out, the hitch hiker thought my friend was the psycho. Its a better story when my friend tells it....sorry, i did my best.

Just to let you no, i would never pick up a hitch hiker cuz you just never no........!

Depends on what SHE looks like (alot of strange ladies out there).

Seriously though, there is alot of paranoia out there. Should we all not be a little more trusting and community spirited. I pick up hitchers if I have room and have never found them anything but nice and interesting. Obviously you have to be careful, I'd not pick up several people and you have to use your common sense, but come on people; how mean can you be?
