Ryder Cup.

Named after Samuel Ryder with Abe Mitchell depicted on the trophy. Abe Mitchell was considered one of best British golfers of his era.

Ryder, who donated a gold cup and had agreed to pay £5 to each member of the winning team, attached his name to the new competition. It has been held on a two year cycle since, apart from 1939 to 1945 when it was cancelled due to World War II.

The Ryder Cup
************************
It was at the '26 Wentworth meet that the Ryder Cup became the Ryder Cup. At a luncheon following the competition, it was suggested to Samuel Ryder, a British seed merchant, that he donate a trophy for a biennial competition between an American and British team of professionals. Ryder liked the idea. There was a certain degree of self-interest involved in this. Ryder did a good bit of business selling grass seed to American as well as British golf course operators. And, ego. As part of his gift, Ryder prescribed that the competition be named after him in perpetuity.. But for all that, it is safe to say Ryder was also driven to make this contribution to the game because he loved golf with the passion of someone who had taken it up late in life. Indeed, the golfing figure on the solid gold trophy he commissioned was modeled after Abe Mitchell, one of the best British golfers of the era, and Ryder's personal teacher.
