What about people of color? I am of African, Irish, and Native American descent, however looking at me, most would assume that I am African American. Although they do ask question do to the texture of my hair. One can only assume that if you are "black" that you have ancestry in Africa. Why is it that there are no discussion when Italian are called Italian American or Irish call themselves Irish Americans. I personally don't like to categorize anyone by the color of their skin because you may be surprised. I have a friend who is bi racial but you would think that he was Caucasian if you saw him walking down the street. It wasn't until we had know each other for a few weeks that we even discussed his nationality because it didn't matter to either of us whether the other was black, white, purple or blue. The only thing that mattered was how we treated each other.

I think this is a term that they are comfortable with and do not take any offense with others calling them African Americans. It is true that maybe they are from other areas, but this just is the one that seems to stick. The "Black People" in this country were so abused, that I am ashamed, and I want to make it up to them. Whatever they feel best being called, is ok with me. I remember as a child in Texas, they had to sit in the back of the bus, have black and white drinking fountains, had to sit in a balcony at the movie, had a sep. entry, it was horrible. This was just in the 1950's, not the 1800, where they did more horrible things. They were treated like dogs, like animals, no wonder they have an attitude towards the white people, even those are not probably still alive, most of them even from the 1940-1950. I just cannot imagine the inhumanities that have been done to the human race by monsters, devils, and Satan. If you were an alien, would you stop and get out on this violent planet, stop and think about it.

You refer to us a African Americans because a vast majority of us were descended from people taken from Africa. There may be a number of people here descended from Australians but they would be a small minority.
And it is appropriate to refer to an Egyptian American as an African American since Egypt is a part of Africa.

Most of the black people I have met in my life, call themselves Black.
There were just a few that called themselves African American and they really were from Africa.
Hope this helps.

I'm not into being politically correct. I say black. If I'm talking about their nationality, I say American. I'm white and I live in a mostly black neighborhood and most of the people that I talk to don't call themselves "African Americans". I've heard a few people talking about it that get peeped off and say, "I'm not from Africa".

Depends on the person. I notice the older ones like it but the younger ones seem to like black better. I never understood being called white when I am beige technically.

I think the best term is Human. Maybe if we decide to recognize each other now, it would be best just to say American if they are a us citizen.
