In those days, old kings knew it would be a perfect match: religion and politics...what better way to keep people in line than to paint "God" as an angry vengeful deity, so nasty that even his "love" comes with an awful catch. They don't call it The King James version for nothing.

Your concept is much closer to truth, as is mine.

I like your question.

I think my favorite part in the Bible (and forgive me, all, that I don't know the verse off-hand, but I'm sure someone diligent can find it) where this subject is concerned, is when the Jews are marching with the Ark. No one is supposed to touch the Ark, but the load-bearers drop the ball, and the Ark's crashing to the ground. One of the quick-witted guards flashes out and saves the Ark from biting the dust... and...

God smites him, then and there, for breaking the rules.

Yeah, it's a lot like when your parents punish you when you're a kid, and you don't understand. And then, you grow up, and you learn that Daddy was drunk at the time.

God, in the Bible, is a jerk. We can chant "God is Love" to ourselves all day if we'd like, but the Yahweh in the Old Testament is boorish and petulant, just like some of the less charismatic Ancient Greek deities. To pretend otherwise is lame, but amusing.

Firstly, please do know that Bible is not God's real words. It has been changed and edited by the selfish people who wants to use the Bible for their own good for a long time ago and thats why Gods send Prophet Muhammad(pbuh) with a new Guidebook,The Koran to correct the peoples believes.Secondly,it is this type of people Gods wants to punish. The sinners.Or else, why should rules exist. To lead people towards the right way of course. The right way to live this life.Correct me if I'm wrong.

The Bible is written by man. When you see in the Bible an army going to destroy an entire nation (except the virgins - see Exodus for this one... it comes after God tells Israel that it's a sin to kill), I see these things as more the writer justifying the groups actions by saying "God said"... Exactly what I'm seeing other people do here by quoting the Bible to justify their own actions... "God said it right here in the Bible....."

You can not claim to be Merciful, Just and Loving and go directly against what those 3 words mean. Throwing people in hell is NOT Mercy... it's Vindictiveness. And I truly do love it when they compare God to a Parent figure who is frustrated with their children. We read all the time about these Parents who have abused their children but insist they did it out of love... and what do we do with those types of people? We take their kids away and lock the parents up. And isn't God's love supposed surpass that of any mortal? Yet, the parents who truly are loving towards their children wouldn't send them to an eternity of torment because the child denies they are his parents.

The whole concept is merely a ploy by the writers themselves to justify their groups actions.... God said to go and kill all those people... Don't we lock people up in psych wards for saying these types of things? Yet, it's justified in the Bible?????????

The new testament god...he's a little more user friendly.

The old testament god, on the other hand, is more of the evil tyrant/spoiled child. He lays down the law (his law) and when its not followed the way he wants, he either:

a) kicks you out of his garden
b) turns your wife to salt
c) sends angels with flaming swords to take out the town
d) drowns the earth
e) kills the first born son of an entire nation...

Religions do that to gain followers. They threaten you with hell if you don't swallow raw whatever they tell you. They want to scare people into following the religion. Christianity is one of the religions that does this.

The funny thing is that those religions usually teach that their god is a loving, fair and just god. Then they go off screaming in people's face that they're going to hell for not believing in the right god and that you go to hell if you're gay, but god will forgive you if you molest children. Sounds like a great god, doesn't it?

You think with a forked mind. One picture = Kind with children Another= filled with Hate. The obly thing God hates is sin, Hell was made for satan and the rest of the fallen angels not for man. Read the Bible properly.

Because if you were to believe the bible, 'Put no other God before me', Love god and repent or DIE! And the LORD thy God will circumcise thine heart, and the heart of thy seed, to love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, that thou mayest live. Very much a tyrant.

One of the reasons why I became Atheist. God doesn't seem so user friendly but more of a insecure selfish tyrant.

All those things that "God" does in the bible, man has made crimes in his various cultures, murder, rape, committing of genocides, causing floods, fire and earthquakes (terrorism). If god gets frustrated with his progeny then decides to punish it, they accept that, but if a man gets frustrated with his wife and kids and "Punishes" them, he is called a criminal. (rightly so) I say hold god to the same standard.
