I did a test a few years ago to find out and based on gas consumption to heat the same volume of water and the cost of gas, it turned out to be cheaper than elec. But on the downside, it did take slightly longer. A lot of the energy goes to waste heating up the surroundings (which might be a good thing in a cold house). Also less risk of fire and explosion with elec. Gas is probably more economical friendly as elec. has to be generated from some form of energy conversion, but gas is pretty much in its raw state.

It's much faster in an electric kettle which would make me think that you're probably using less energy, it's designed purely for heating water, which probably makes it more efficient as the heating element actually touches the water rather than having to conduct heat through a metal pan.

The electric kettle will cheaper, because it is using the energy more efficiently. The kettle would also be more environmentally friendly, because it requires less resources to make it than a big ol' gas hob.
