Sorry If I sound confusing by this.

But is there a way to find out the history of a family somewhere online, by searching by the last name?

I grew up never knowing my father but I do know things about him. One of those things is that I know he's Italian and his last name. I have been searching for a few years to find stuff about my Italian herritage, he was 100% Italian so I know that I have alot of Italian blood in me.

So I wanted to know if there was somewhere I could just type in the last name and find out where the ancestors of that name came from, like what part of Italy.

I would perfer it to be free of cost but if there is somthing where I can find that out, i doubt it would be.

Well depends, on your circumstances.

If it is because he left your mum ask her.
If its donor sperm, then maybe the clinic might know or your mum might.
If it is adoption, then ask your adopted parents for help

Julia...the website Ted gave will help out with the origin. Definately use that. There are a lot of Italian specific websites out there. Do a Yahoo or Google search for Italian genealogy and you will come up with a lot of hits! If you know where in the States your Dad is from, contact the local genealogy society and they might be able to help you too. Or you can do a Yahoo search for the last name. Just put the last name and "genealogy" and you might get a hit. Also, try Rootsweb and go to the message boards...then go to surname and try to find that name. Post a message...maybe you will find a long lost cousin. Good luck!

is free. Select "Name Origins". It may help. It may not; the surname could be the Italian equivalent of "Strong arm" (Armstrong) or "Carpenter" or "Baker" or "Meadows".

The resolved Q have thousands of links for genealogy research, if you are interested. Some - the Mormons and RWWC - let you type in a surname.
