Why should we? Some of us have no interest in learning Spanish and did not move to a Spanish speaking country, so don't have a 'politeness to hosts not to change their home' issue.

On the other hand, I think legal residents can try to get along without English if they really want to, other than in schools. I just think it is really dumb. Have you looked at the success rates of immigrants who learn English as opposed to immigrants who didn't? The disparity lasts for generations.

Regarding illegal immigrants, changing someone else's home when you are there illegally is just more likely to make them want you to leave.

Do you mean learn Spanish as another language or as Americans. The popularity of a language is no reason to learn it, however those living in America should learn English because that is the language we speak here.
You wouldn't go to France and ask the French to learn English for you, although some people do that, which is probably why they don't like us. Asking Americans to learn Spanish to accommodate the large number of Spanish-speaking immigrants is just as arrogant as when American tourists want Thai people to learn English for them.

Oh boy where to start on this one? First of all this is an English speaking country, sorry to INFORM You of this, but it is the truth. It is NOT racist to want the immigrants that come here to learn English. You would think it would be common sense for them to learn it.
When I first moved overseas I had to take a class about what to do and what not to do. One of the things that stuck with me was when I am in public I am representing the USA, if I am courteous and polite then the people will get a good impression of America, if I'm rude and obnoxious (like many Americans are) then they will have a bad impression of Americans.
There used to be a commercial on the radio, that ran. It had a guy asking "Do you know where the train station is" and another man answers in Japanese, so he moves on to a woman and asks her "Do you know any English" she replies "Yes I do" so he asks her "Do you know where the train station is?" she says "Yes I do". In the commercial he asks each one several times and each time his voice gets louder.
The narrator comes on and says "Speaking louder and yelling are not going to make the people understand you" and he goes on to say that we Americans should try to learn the language because we are guests in their country, NOT the other way around.

Do you think it's racist of the Japanese to want me to learn their language while living their country?? I don't think it is, I think it is arrogance to live in another country and not learn the language that is spoken there.
I can not speak Japanese, BUT I always carried around a translating dictionary. (as did many people I knew) And I at least tried, which speaks volumes.

Do you see Americans crossing into Mexico in the still of the night and then asking them why are they racist because they
want the gringos to learn Spanish... I guess you did not see the article where the photog took a picture of the face of 190 different countries in the world in New York City... should we all learn to speak their language also so as not to be considered racist... NOT.. English is the official Language of the US and if you choose to live here....guess what.

These days you can learn how to speak German over the internet. Check out this online course, it's voted as the best German online course of all time: http://www.rocketlanguages.link/german The course is very easy to follow, I was able to learn German in just 3 months.

I live in New York City, I wanted to go to a German language teacher but that would have cost me over $800 per month. Good thing with this internet, $800 it's a lot of money for me.

I am not a racist for wanting people to speak the language of the country I live in. If they want to live a better life here speak the language as it shows some respect for the nation. Why do you think we have to learn Spanish? I dont live where it is the primary language.

Why spanish? If I go to France, I need to learn french, if I go to Germany I need to learn german!!! I am not in Spain, so why do I have to learn spanish? English is what I speak and I have never had a problem speaking to people here in America because last time I checked, most of America speaks english!! No racism here, just common sense!

I am a Hispanic American. I grew up in the late 60's and early 70's. Back in those days you were treated badly if you didn't speak English. So, I made sure that I learned proper English so that I didn't have to be worried about education, employment, social identity. Because I grew up in America, I have every right as an American to speak English. Then 30 years later some "illegal alien" is going to ask me why I don't speak Spanish, in English??? I want to punch some one like that in the face.
It's not about being a racist. It's about respecting the country that I live in.
Have you ever been to France?? You can't go over seas and expect that they are going to turn their whole country and beliefs just be cause you are American. Be assured that you better know the language in any country that you visit out of respect to know the native language.
It makes me sick that the Illegal Aliens that sneek themselves into our Country during the cloak of night think that we as Americans have to conform to them.

Why don't the illegals actually try to enter the country legally, instead of sneaking across the border?

The main language of the United States is English, always has since its inception. When one enters a country as an immigrant, it is their duty to assimilate to the society into which they enter. That means, learn and understand the main language spoken in that country, and how the society works. An immigrant cannot demand that the society he/she has entered into learn their language. It is rude and inapproriate. Civilized people don't tolerate it.

If we were in Mexico, Colombia, or any other Spanish speaking country, I would be inclined to say the same. But, alas for you, we are not. English is the language of this country and the majority of it's people, so I suggest you quit crying foul and start hitting those English books.
