An INFECTIOUS DISEASE is an illness due to a specific infectious agent or its toxic products that arises through transmission of that agent or its products from an infected person, animal or inanimate source to a susceptible host; either directly or indirectly through an intermediate plant or animal host, vector or inanimate environment.

I'm taking issue with everyone else's answers. Here's why (point by point)

Krixter and origamiman: Not all infectious diseases are passed person to person. For example, many ID's are passed ANIMAL to human, but can't be spread human to human. Others are spread from the environment to people (tetanus from feces in dust, etc.)

BacteriaBoy: Usually, I love your answers, but I have to nitpick this one. Not all ID'sare caused by pathogenic organisms. The best counterexample I can think of would be Creutzfeld-Jakob, which is spread by prions. A protein, yes. An organism, no. Infectious? Absolutely.

Nancy g: GENETIC illnesses are definitely not infectious.

mallimali: See my reply to Bacteria Boy. But at least he thinks of his answers and doesn't scour answers.com for them.

huh, well, a disease is something wrong with your body that can be spread-whether air-borne,through blood, even genetically....an in fection is like when you cut yourself and dont keep it clean, then it swells,pusses-thats a type of infection-also infection simply means to catch something unpleasant from another....so maybe its a disease caused by an infected area,or its a really silly word...like flabby fat...
