The puppy might be teething, and chewing on stuff helps him deal with the itching gums. The trick that worked with our dog is either stuff an old sock with foam/cotton and let him chew it instead. Since puppies have sharp teeth, you might consider a thick sock, or 2-3 layers of socks. Or, use a broken bathroom slipper (hawai chappal). They love to chew on it, and if you take it away playfully, he'll run around with it, and adopt it as his toy quickly. Once the teething age is over, the chewing problem should also disappear.
Also, every time he chews something, punish him mildly for 5-10 mins. Chaining it up works as a strong-enough deterrant for an active puppy.

All puppies like to chew things, most grow out of it with age. My friend has a puppy that is 5 months old and she doesn't chew things anymore. Just leave him in the kitchen until this age or remove everything chewable from within the puppies area.

Does he have toys to entertain him while you are out? Unfortunately chewing is part and parcel of having a puppy or kitten. Give him something like a KONG toy which will entertain him while at the same time give him something to chew on and also exercise his jaws and help keep his teeth clean

My veterinarian advised me once that you should leave the puppy in a small dog house with his favorite toy and also buy him lots of chewing treats. For a while, unfortunately you will go thru this.Best of luck!

Years and years ago, when we used to train hunting dogs, we used cayenne pepper to stop the more hard-headed dogs from biting/chewing things. Use sparingly, and yes, it can also make them sneeze.

Buy him one of those balls you fill with treats and as he plays with it the treats fall out so he can eat them, all puppies chew, just like babies like to bite, they get teething too, try to keep him amused.
