According to Catholic DOCTRINE -- not according to the personal opinions of Catholic practitioners -- do Jews automatically go to hell? I seem to remember that Vatican II changed the church stance on that, but I'm not sure. Sources would be greatly appreciated...

Thanks!

...personally, I don't care one way or another. I'm not at all religious. BUT, I need to know the official Catholic stance; I need to know, doctrinally, what's "on the books" whether or not it's what people believe in the pews, whether or not it's what the priests are preaching.

Not necessarily.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church states,

The Jewish faith, unlike other non-Christian religions, is already a response to God's revelation in the Old Covenant.

To the Jews belong the sonship, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the worship, and the promises; to them belong the patriarchs, and of their race, according to the flesh, is the Christ; for the gifts and the call of God are irrevocable.

With love in Christ.

Um, I don't need a source for this but all Christians must believe jews go to hell....anyone who is not a Christian goes to hell in Christianity. They are pretty much the only religion that has a condition of religion to go to heaven, i.e you must believe Jesus is your Lord Saviour to enter heaven. Even if you are the Dalai Lama.
I don't know about what the Vatican said about Jews and Hell but apparently on the advice of a Vatican sub-committee, the Pope has decided that Limbo no longer exists. To me this is ridiculous, the idea of Limbo is a 1500 year old tenet of Catholic belief in the afterlife and it's interesting that all it takes is bureaucratically-derived advice to fundamentally shift mythology.
Way to go Pope! I'm sure it inspires goodwill and confidence in Christianity to know that an elected official can change the nature of the afterlife with a simple decree. Frankly, I can't think of a more absurd thing than a man being able to change what happens after you die based on a committee recommendation.
if you don't believe Jews are going to Hell than you are not a true Christian no matter how hard you try to side step it, it is what is said in the Bible....
(no, I'm not a Christian)

I don't think that the Jews care about the Catholics opinions.of which the Jewish religion is older and Catholic Christianity is a sect of it.
no matter the religion those that follow the laws of their God will go to their idea of heaven .and those that don't will go someplace else. Hell ,limbo, returned back to Physical life under harsher conditions to get into heaven.

I went to Catholic school for 8 years. I was taught anyone who was not Catholic was going to hell. Ironically an older Jewish man lived up the road from me and would read me classic tales and he and his wife would give me gifts. When I was told they wouldn't go to heaven I was mortified. I was 8 when I began to wake up.

Catholics believe that God will decide who is going to go to hell or to heaven. We don't believe that only Catholics are going to go to heaven but all the "good" people

It is not ur religion that takes u to heaven ie faith without love/charity is nothing...
I am a catholic n i think we will go to hell if we dont practice love charity and all the values we hold. which will be the same for all religions so dont be fooled by religion, not all who say Lord, Lord will enter te kingdom of God. Itsur cactions that take u where u belong

No, of course not. Judaism is an honourable and respectable religion responsible for basic concepts of charity, democracy and individualism in Western society. As for the Vatican, they have their own issues and have never owned up to their lack of concern or aid during the Holocaust. They are unlikely to compensate Jews in Europe, Israel, North Africa and America for their indifference and they're storing $3 billion worth of goods in there.

I think regardless of the church's stance or scholarly sources, bad people go to hell and good people go to heaven, and if not that it is unknown who goes and who stays, that's for God to decide.

Christianity was based off Judaism. Christ was Jewish. Judaism has been around a lot longer than Christianity. Maybe extremists believed this when Christianity was at its infancy when many of its teachings were written, but this isn't what is taught or believed among Christians today.

God is th Judge of us ALL! All I know is that when you believe in your heart that Jesus came to earth to dwell amongst us and died for our sins and rose again on the third day, to be with God the Father has sent us the Holy Spirit to comfort us, and we start to love others as we aught to. Ask Him to forgive us our sins, we will be with Him forever and ever. No matter what else!!!
