Orange juice is high in Vitamin C and has been recommended for years to help. Also Home Made chicken soup. Some people say to use Zinc Lozenges also. Also be sure to get lots of rest and drink lots of other fluids, like water, decaf tea, Sprite or 7-up. Alcohol is dehydrating/drying to the tissues. Take very warm showers or make a tent with a towel over a pot of steamy water, don't burn your face. Breathe the vapors in deeply. Stay warm, don't chill. Colds are viral and usually have to run their course, about 7 days.

Well done for giving up the dreaded weed!

For the cold, take double doses of Vitamin C twice a day, drink about 8 glasses of water every day, take a multivit and plenty of Vit B.

Eat lots - "feed a cold and starve a fever!" - it does help. Eat two dinners as well as a breakfast and snacks - but eat "proper" food. It really does help. Apparently there are some studies to show that chicken soup actually does help too!!

About a month after you stop smoking, it's quite common to get a chest infection as the muck starts churning out of your lungs - some people get very bad chest infections and pneumonias - get to your GP and let them check you out. You may need a course of antibiotics - not for the cold, but for the chest side of it.

Good luck and stay off the cigs!

I've always found that if I've got a really bad chesty cold; all I need to do is sleep with lots of pillows around me (so that I'm semi-sitting up) that way the gunk settles in the bottom of your lungs and you can get a good nights sleep! Then when you wake up, go straight to the shower and have a really hot steamy one. It'll enable you to cough up all the gross stuff easily.

If your throat is hurting, then I always go with: 2 parts honey to 1 part fresh lemon juice, heated in the microwave. Does wonders.

Hope you get better soon!

It's not really a remedy, it's a medicine: Guaifenesin, as was prescribed by doctors before and known these days as over the counter Musinex. Good job on quitting smoking. You are an inspiration for a lot of people.

Chinese Hot and Sour soup is good and helps clear congestion like mad! Get someone to go out and bring you some. Chicken soup (which is the base) is good for a cold and the spice clears your pipes.
Also, the hot toddy suggestion is good. Plenty of rest and liquids.

You poor old devil. Keep warm and drink lots of fluids - my dad swears by warm water - ugh.

Put your head over a bowl of hot water and breathe in the steam - that might loosen things up a bit.

If you don't improve in a few days, see a doctor.

Get well soon.
