It happens only with the EDUCATED people. It just started as a fashion and pride using English as medium of conversing. You made out a good point, but you know one thing, how many English words are used by us even when we talk in our mother tongue? think about it.
Its basically becoz of the English who ruled us for more than 200 years and even after that we send our children to school where the medium of teaching and the first language is English. How many of us send our children to the school with a medium of teaching in our Mother tongue???
And another striking point is how many of us sign in our mother tongue? hardly 2% ( including the illiterates). Good point but not to be ashamed but let us also look into the development of the native languages as well.

are you talking about actual indians from india?

if u are, then its because nowadays most ppl in india speak english more frequently instead of hindi. we are generally more comfortable using english instead of any other lang b'coz we are being brought up in an english speaking community(schools teach in english, friends speak eng, family speaks eng etc etc)

by the way not all indians know their mother tongue. (i dont know hindi) and quite a few indians do know only their mother tongue.
its just because the population of india is soooo big that there are about 3,500 different languages in india and so we choose english as its the universal lang....
and if we are abroad we dont use our mother tongue because we know its rude (infact even in india if some one speaks a lang we dont understand we get bugged)

Because their mother tongues are different. We have at least a dozen major languages.Hindi which is the main one, is the mother tongue about 30-40% of Indians.
Tamil,Telugu,Malayalam,Kannada, Bengali, Marathi, Gujarati, Urdu are some of them.

there are many languages in india. they might not necessarily know each other's mother tongue.

anyway, usually i see complaints on this site about people speaking their native language in front of people who don't understand that language. just yesterday, someone was complaining about two ladies speaking Chinese in his office!

i think Indians are a proud people in general.

i dont know. my sister speaks fluent spanish as a 2nd language. if i knew spanish i'd speak it with her for no reason. it helps keep it fresh. we could communicate when other people might not understand us. it is a challange/puzzle for me. its beautiful/ineresting. i dont know. lots of reasons.
