We are thinking of giving our cat to the pound because we do not have the income for de-wormer and vaccinations but we are hoping to buy her back after she regains her health is this illegal?

You probably would spend more money doing that. Check with your local feed supply store, most carry a line of vaccines. If you don't know how to give the shot and don't want to try ask someone you know with animal or human experience. Shots from the supply store generally run less than $10 for everything but rabies.

If you want to give the shot it's easy. At the back of the neck pinch a bit of skin and lift. This should make a triangle. Insert needle into triangle and push plunger. Wham your done.

If you think the cat needs worming the supply store will give you the correct product as well. Generally if the cat's fur is in good condition, and she's not underweight then she might not need worming.

Get toothpaste while your at it. Dental health is just as important.

I work at a cat shelter, and we have this same situation a lot. The truth is, we do NOT often allow the person to adopt the cat back, because they STILL do not have the income to take care of it. What happens four months down the road if the cat gets really sick and need $100 woth of vet care????? The people are RIGHT back at the shelter looking for help again. So it is often better for the cat to be rehomed with someone who can take care of it.

They will not give your cat back to you, and if you can't afford the wormer or vaccinations how do you expect to 'buy' your cat back??? The vaccinations are not that expensive and neither is the wormer!
Not illegal..just doesn't make any sense.

You might want to check your local pet stores or humane society, you may be able to locate a discounted or even free service to take care of your cat. If you give the cat to the pound, you might risk losing it, or it even being put to sleep if it isn't reclaimed or adopted afterwards. I don't think it would be illegal, but if you want to take care and keep your pet, I would see what kind of local help is available first. Depending on the size of the town/city you are in, you may be pleasantly surprised how many services are available to help.

Sometimes medications at the vet are really expensive. But there is a cheaper way to de-worm and give your cat there shots. Try going to your local Feed Store. Cats shot are normally about 5.00 and the wormer isn't expensive either. For under 20.00 you can get what your cat needs. If you give your cat to the vat sick, they will probarly put her down, they don't normally keep sick cats. It's hard enough to find homes for healthy ones. It will be more expensive for you to buy her back then going to the feed store and buying what she needs.

Not illegal but definately selfish. If you knew you couldn't afford her you should never have gotten her to start with. By now the cat will have bonded with you and the separation to her is totally cruel. Find some other ways to cut corners so that she can be vaccinated and de-wormed (worming is NOT expensive) Alternatively, you can find a vet that will let you pay off the vet bill if you explain your circumstances.

First of all, it costs money to surrender an animal at the pound. Second, there are low cost and sometimes free clinics to have their shots (distemper especially) and to be spayed or neutered. Also, deworming. It will cost you way more to get her back if you even can get her back, they might put her to sleep. Try an ABC Clinic. Usually they let you pay in payments, or they will suggest a low cost method to care for your cat.

have you bothered looking for free med treatment? There are so many free and discount vaccination clinics out there it is ridiculous.

Don't get an animal if you won't take care of it. Also, the pound won't let you adopt her back.

"After she regains her health"???

So she is already sick.

A surrendered cat, after vet check, worming, microchipping, desexingt, etc is put up for adoption straight away.
If she is sick, and you have surrendered her and want her back, you will have to pay for all vet bills and boarding. So it will cost you a heck of a lot more.

It may not be illegal, but it is immoral
