Aren't they supposed to be modest? Why do they want to be prettier than they actually are? It seems kinda sinful to me. If I were a women and did what the Bible said, I'd cover up like a Muslim.

Some churches do not permit makeup and high heels. For instance, most of the local Mennonites here will not wear such things. Certain Pentecostals will also not wear these things. But for many other Christian women, makeup is perfectly acceptable. I don't have a problem with it at all. Why not try to look one's best in public? Not saying that women who don't wear makeup don't look fine, too, but some women feel better wearing makeup, and if so, then they should wear it. To be too overly concerned with the outer appearance is religious legalism.

OK, so I agree, yes, you heard me right. Or read me right..lol. Anyway I just wanna say that you can be modest and look nice at the same time. I try my best to be a modest Christian woman. I wear clothes that cover my "areas" I don't show my breasts or my thighs. I have long hair, because the it is a glory to a woman. I wear makeup because I wanna feel pretty for me, not for a man, not even for my husband, but just for me! I don't wear expensive jewelry because i don't see how you can talk to people about being humble if you are all decked out in "bling" It just doesn't work like that. I also agree that alot of Christians are hypocrites, I have known some, but that was people, not God!

1Timothy 2:9 reads:
"In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array;"

1Corin.11:5] But any women who prays and prpecies with head unveiled dishonours her head-it is the same as if her head were shaven, for if a womenwill not veil herself then she should cut off her hair. But if it is disgraceful for a women to be shorn or shaven, let her wear a veil.

Fashion is a form of ugliness so intolerable that we have to alter it every six months.

The clothes make the man. Naked people have little or no influence on society.

Well, I do find it odd that many people who claim their life is about following God dress so extravagantly, or in some cases so gaudily.
However, I find it even more odd that Muslim or Christian men think that what is OK for the man is not OK for the woman.
I find it odd that Christians make it a practice to sin skillfully and then just as skillfully make a show of asking for forgiveness.
I find it odd that I would overhear a conversation between two Muslim men in Japan, one from Morocco who is arguing that even though the MANY MANY MANY women who have made whores of themselves by sleeping with him are sinful, he is not sinning because he is a man, according to his interpretation of Islam. Meanwhile the other Muslim guy from Tunisia is arguing that it IS sinful for men to have sex before marriage, the same as women, even thought HE is ALSO on a personal mission to see how many Japanese women he can bag.

By the way, I find it rather interesting that Muslim women go so far as to cover themselves up, but then wear makeup! I've seen many of them who do, even though they were covered head to toe in black. One would seem to contradict the other. On top of that, I've heard that many Muslim women buy very sexy underwear to wear under their clothes. After I heard that, I saw some Muslim women dressed in conservative clothes shopping for lingerie! How about that! lol

The Mennonites are more modest than the average Christian and as I recall there is nothing in the Bible condemning high heels and makeup...

I'm christian, and we are suppose to take care of our bodies because they are Temple's,now would you rather look at a temple with no shutters,no trim, plan and drab,I've never seen where it say to look like a dog, taking care of your body and wear ing some make up is not a sin, and wearing heels aren't either, but if we come in looking like a street walker with short skirts and 9 in heels looking like a prostitute, them that would be a problem, modest dress doesn't mean frumpy, and covering of the head was suppose to be only for when in church back in biblical times,we live in a different era, modest means correct lengthy dresses ,proper height of heals and makeup can be applied without looking like someone put on a makeup counter ,

Those commands were given because at the time there were a lot of people worshiping fertility goddesses and there was a lot of temple prostitution going on. These ladies would cut their hair and wear jewelry and paint their faces in excess.

The early church reminded the early believers that they are no longer part of the world even though they lived in the world. They were sanctified (set apart).

It was important to not give non-believers the wrong impression about Christianity, therefore it was commanded that women not dress the way the temple prostitutes dressed.

Does this mean that we are suppose to look all frumpy and miserable? Hardly! We are to care for ourselves for our Lord, for ourselves and or for our husbands (The Proverbs 31 woman would never let her hair get all ratty and her under arms smelly or her face crusty).

There is a way to adorn yourself modestly, being pretty and well groomed without being flashy and revealing.

PS When I was in India, the muslim women buried under that sea of black cloth always managed to decorate themselves. How? Their shoes and their handbags.

This was their voice, their personality! I could tell who was young, old, conservative, "flashy" and or just plain modest through and through simply by the handbag and the shoes.

The same can be said for American women. There is a way to choose each piece of one's wardrobe and have it say,"I am modest," or "I am immodest."

You are right they are not supposed to wear make up and they must cover ther hair or have it shaved off (1 Corrinthians 11:3-6)
.......now i have nothing against moderation etc and not going the whole hog in religion, but it is so incredibaly frustrating when they go on about Islam or "sinners" when they are cherry pickers of their own religion (and obviously i don't mean all Christians). I mean they say how horrible the Qur'an is to women when it does not say anything like what it say in the Bible and the Qur'an says:
"be you MALE OR FEMALE, YOU ARE EQUAL TO ONE ANOTHER........." Quran 3:195
They also like to make a big hoo-hah about Islamic women being "forced" to cover their hair because of the Qur'an when no one is being forced and it actually does not say women must cover their hair or wear a hijab, but dress modestly, cover the breasts, show only what they feel needs to be revealed (a personal choice for the woman) and the same is asked for the man.......it is the Bible that says women must cover their hair or have it shaved off...........
If they don't want to that is fine by me, but don't start bagging out other people's ways of living or religion out of ignorance or hypocricy.

I love how men always quote what women should be doing according to the Bible but never look at what is asked of them. Someone quoted 1Timothy 2:9 which was like one verse about what women ought to do and there were dozens of verses before and after on what men are supposed to do. Come on men.....why don't you step up to the plate and be just and good and true and righteous and pure, praying all the time for all men.....and be an example for us lowly women.
Besides, that was Paul's opinion addressing issues of the times they were in. Jesus did away with the laws. I live by the golden rule He gave which is to love God with all my heart and to do unto others as I would have them do unto me.
God doesn't look at our faces anyway.....He looks at our hearts.....what condition is yours in by the way?

Hey, even an old barn can look better with a new coat of paint. Give 'em a break.

You can be made up and remain modest.

Question to onthefence: Exactly where in the Bible does it say to drink from the fruit and not the wheat? It ain't there. Unless you're talking of the Apocrypha, and I don't recall it there either. You must be parroting what someone told you without looking it up yourself, and you call US hypocrites!
