Place your thumb or middle finger to find the pulse in your wrist or your neck, and count the number of beats in a minute. If it's more then the average then you could be unfit.

radial pulse or carotid, that has already been mentioned, with index and middle fingers. Generally, checking for 10 seconds then mutiplying it by 6 is effective. If your looking for complete accuracy, then check if for the entire minute.
You can also look into an inexpensive heart rate monitor. I recommend Polar heart rate monitors, as I've used them for years for marathon, cycling and triathlon training.

Maximum heart rate is 220 less your age. Exercise at 60% to 75% of that.

you can take your pulse for 6 seconds say it came out to a 7 you add a 0 to it and bam you have your heart rate!
