OK, when you wash your hair, use conditioner like big time on it. Let the conditioner sit in your hair for a couple minutes, then rinse it out. Try combing...if there are still knots, do the conditioner again. Then use a spray detangler that you can purchase at a salon, WalMart, KMart. After the conditioning treatment(s), use the spray, a small section at a time, and work through them carefully. I have long hair also (not as long as yours) and have gone through the same predicament. It takes time, work, and patience. The combination of conditioner and spray detangler works for me. Oh, use a very wide-toothed comb.

Get some Graham Webb Silk Repair leave in conditioner, saturate your hair with it after washing - start brushing with a wide-tooth comb from the bottom in sections and work your way to the top. Then use a more narrow-tooth comb and repeat until all of your knots are gone. Be careful to go slowly so your hair doesn't break off into the comb. Just be patient with it. Once you get a section done, maybe braid it and move to the next section, so you don't get them mixed with the other knotted hair.

If you have the time wrap it and pin it. The hair will be combed around your head evenly and will be smooth for comfort. You can take it down when you want to let breath. Do the old fashion thing and braid it into one braid. You can even take the braid and wrap it around your head for comfort. That way you won't be laying on it. Part your the hair done the middle to bun it on both sides out of the way to what ever position you normally sleep it. That works if your not a wild sleeper. Hope your feeling better.

Wash and brush it intensely. Go get it done professionally. If all else fails, consider cutting it. Honestly. Also, try "cutting up" your hair. Grab a knot and cut through the knot. it works on most knots.

Oh God, Poor girl! I feel your pain. Whatever you do don't shampoo it! Lots of conditioner and then start at the tips of your hair and work up with a fine tooth comb.
Good Luck

Johnson&Johnson's Baby shampoo. It's not only tear free but certain kinds have a detangler in them. My mom use to have to use it for me. I still use it. (I have thick, long, long hair also). Don't cut it.
