Even the best state of the art programs that you can buy for hundreds of dollars or maybe rip offline for free suck. Then need hours of reconfiguring before even 90% of your words will type correctly. Its technology not meant to be used yet. But I have heard that it for windows vista may just work because they are making the program for windows vista about 10 times larger and more complex then any current known program that does this. I would wait for vista because every program I have tried sucks badly.

Even though the technology has come a long way in 15 years, it's still not 100% and you'll find yourself spending more time doing clean up work that you would have if you simply types it to begin with. Having said that, try googling "speech to text" voice recognition. I wont recommend any for productivity settings, but IBM has a cool package to play with..

You will need a software application to do that and a somewhat powerful machine. If the machine if several years old, let it go. If you have a newer machine, the best product according to a coworker of mine that tried them all is Dragon from nuance. Keep in mind that even the most reliable speech recognition software will need to learn your voice and even after that will make mistake at a rate that will prevent you to truly write with your voice to the extent that you still have to do formatting and the occasional correction.
