Please do research on your own in this area. I know they're making smaller tampons for girls now, but it's still risky. Girls are more susceptible to infections than adults are. They can forget it's there, put it in too far or so many other things. Despite what one answerer said, it can break the hyman. Girls often don't use them properly and shove them too far or other things. I'd also suggest taking her to a doctor and having her examined. I actually can't use tampons at all. The shape and size won't allow it, not even the small ones. I've still tried, but I just end up irritated and end up with and infection. The doctor told me this is more common than women know. So, having her examined wouldn't hurt.
Good luck!!

You can allow your daughter to wear tampons whenever. It really has nothing to do with age at all. As long is she is comfortable with them and knows how to use them properly.
Contrary to the belief that virgin can't wear tampons is a just a load of BULL. The hymen is so far up in the vagina that a tampon could never reach it. It is virtually impossible for a tampon to penetrate it. This is one thing that most people just don't know. And another thing, even if the tampon could reach the hymen, it would need to be alot bigger to break it. The hymen is full of holes, it is NOT a completely INTACT layer of skin. If it were, we would never have a period because it would block the flow if we were virgins.
I would recommend her to use the "junior" size tampons. These will be rather easy for her to use. If she has a little trouble with inserting them, KY Jelly or some other type of lubricant can be very helpful.
Besides, wearing tampons can make having her period a much easier time. Especially if she wants to go swimming or something like that. She can't wear a pad in the pool!!! And tampons are no where NEAR visible. And she would probably feel ALOT cleaner wearing a tampon. That is the MAIN reason why I wear them.
I hope this helps.........Trust me on it!!!!!
*** One more thing.....TSS ( Toxic Shock Syndrome) is not really much of a concern. This was caused mainly by the use of rayon fibres in tampons. Most companies no longer use rayon in manufacturing. So as long as she remembers to change them every few hours. ( A tampon can be used safely up to 8 hours) there will be NO PROBLEMS. And well, I really doubt she would forget. I don't know many young girls that forget they are having their period!!!

I started wearing tampons when I was 21. I much didn't try till later because my mom said they hurt and she didn't like them. But then again she was part of an older generation ( of tampons I might add). Just make sure your daughter knows what she's doing and that she's comfortable with it and that you remind her to change it every 4 hours or so.

My sister-in-law started her period when she was 10 and never used pads only tampons. I was 13 and used pads for 2 months before switching. My mother let me decide which I would like to use. When my daughter starts I will give her the same decision.

It really depends upon what she wants to do. If she is asking then she might be ready. Just explain it to her and how important it is to change it often, and of course she should use the smallest, lowest absorbency. Personally I didn't want to until I was over 18, but I wish I would have in high school because I had a couple of potentially embarrassing leaking incidents. The only reason you should say no to your daughter is if she's still very young, I'd say she should at least be in high school to use one. Middle school or younger is probably too young unless she's mature for her age, and responsible enough to know when to change them.

Why is it a "big thing"? If she is having periods then she can start wearing tampons as soon as she is ready to.

Your daughter should be allowed to try tampons whenever she feels she'd like to. Buy the smallest ones, explain how they work, go over the instructions and illustrations with her and let her try (on her own). It's important that she understand that tampons need to be changed regularly for health reasons. You can be honest that some women find them uncomfortable and there's nothing wrong with using either pads or tampons so it's completely up to her.
I don't believe there's a right or wrong age to start using them. Many girls use tampons with their hymen still intact and for most, it's not a problem.

I think the right time to start using tampons is when your daughter wants to . If she is active/sporty then she will probably find them much more comfortable when playing sport etc. I got my period when I was 12 and started using tampons at 13. I recommend the tampax brand with the applicator. They are cleaner and easier to use than other types. Good luck!

As long as she is comfortable with it, then she is able to use them as soon as she starts. For alot of woman and most teenagers, it is the preferred method. It is more comfortable, and she won't feel so self-confident that time of the month. I say let her use them if she wants, and see if it works for her. When I was a teenager my parents didn't let me use tampons, and it was really depressing for me because it was my body, should have been my decision. They just where paranoid parents,so I just ended up using them anyways, getting them from friends or secretly buying them (when i could, which was rare) and i hid them. It really is not a big deal and has nothing to do with age. hope this helps :)

I didn't start wearing them until I was in my twenties. I was too nervous about them and my mom said she never used them. I really wished someone had told me how wonderful they are much earlier in life!!!!! They are great - I told my mother and now she even uses them. As soon as your daugther is old enough to get her period, she is old enough to use tampons imo. I recommend the junior or regular sizes, and get the ones with the plastic applicator or smooth applicator - they are much easier to insert. Just remind her not to wear them over 8 hours, to change them frequently, and alternate between pads.
