ok, so my cat played with a centerpiece on our table, with sharp plastic flower things. one of them poked her mouth, and the side of her mouth is swollen, there is no bleeding though. this happened about 4 days ago, and sometimes she can't, or won't close her mouth all the way. she didn't stop eating, but is having trouble keeping food in her mouth-will the mouth heal on its own, or can a vet do anything about it?

I found that one of her teeth are loose, and she has to 'work' to get her mouth to close right-would the vet pull the tooth out?

If it is still swollen 4 days later, she needs to see a vet. There could be a piece of foreign material, or an abscess forming. A good physical exam will allow the vet to see what is going on, and then they can let you know what needs to be done. There is a possibility that if your cat is painful, or if she is uncooperative, she may need sedation to allow for proper visualization of the area. This might be the best thing, so don't be freaked out if the vet suggests it.
Good luck!

Take it to the vet it's an abscess. Your cat's mouth has an infection. Don't wait until the cats stops eating it will be more painful and take more time to heal. She might have food stuck in there also that will need for the vet to clean. Since its the mouth they might need to put the cat under for a short time.

I have a cat named Mario who likes to fight outside with other tomcats. One time, he came home and seemed fine, but withing days, the whole side of his face was swollen. We checked it out (both of us, one held his paws while the other poked and looked and checked) and we found that he had gotten a small puncture wound that got infected. we had to use a warm clothe and open the pucture wound, flush or squeeze out the bad stuff (kitty doesn't like this) and then we kept it clean for a few days and he healed after that. Your baby might have a puncture wound from yourcenter peice, and even a small particle of dust could cause it to become infected. Check her out, and even if you don't find a wound, try the warm cloth anyway and keep the sore area clean for a few days. Other than that, follow the advise of the person that said to watch for behavior changes. It took Mario about 2 weeks to completly heal. I would say that if things don't look better, run her into a vet. I have heard that even cats can get cancer and sists and things so if she doesn't get better in about 3 more days, get her checked. At this point, better to be safe than sorry.

Technically, it should heal on its own. Whenever something goes wrong with any of my animals I put it in terms of their natural lives and instincts - If this happened in the wild, could they heal themselves? In this case its 100% yes, cats often get a barb in the mouth from eating things off the bone or hunting but the fact that it was the cetrepiece makes it difficult. It could have been treated with something that has irritated her mouth, impeding the healing process. Youve waited four days already, so Id suggest keeping a very close eye on her, infections can kill a cat within hours, and maybe wait a few more days to see how it develops. The fact that she is still eating is a fantastic sign, usually animals wont touch food when their mouths are injured. Id say shes just feeling a bit sore and sorry, and the vet would probably only give her antibiotics, tetanus and anti inflammatory painkillers. Watch her like a hawk for changing behaviour, ANYTHING weird at all, and if your really worried, get her to a vet, particularly for tetanus.
One of our cats once chomped off the ear of a METAL horse trophy, the trophy has never recovered, but the cat thought it was tasty. Also one of my horses got a small metal barb in his muzzle, I was expecting a massive fight and a huge vet bill, and he got it out on his own! Animals will always surprise you...

You need to take your kitty to the vet to have her mouth checked out. It doesn't take long for the kitty to get infections from stuff like that. My kittie's mouth got hurt and now her gums are so red and swollen and she has pus in her mouth. The vet gave her a steroid shot, I have to give her antibiotics, she has to have prednisone and I also have to hold her down to put some steroid cream in her mouth...she hates this and it hurts her so much.....So please...don't wait much longer to have your kitty checked out....it just gets worse the longer you wait.

A vet can probably help this. It could be serious or fatal. I would get it checked out.
