A 25 cent bullet saved the taxpayers $45,000 a year for prison time plus court costs. Pretty good investment if you ask me.

I am a Military Police officer. I served a year in Germany doing police work just like a cop over hear. I think about the officer. How hard it is to live with something like that. You will always look back and second guess yourself and wonder if you had done one thing different if that guy would still be alive. But then you think about what would have happend if he had shot you. As american's we are very diferent in that way. We are held at a higher standerd than most nations for the actions of our police. I worked along side the German Polizi (Police) there is no such thing as police brutality to them. If a cop over here even draws his weapon out ( this is called the show of deadly force) he is alot of time suspended and investigated. I've seen people beeten to a pulp for just talking back to a german police officer. Over hear you can't use any kind of force unless they do first. If an officer shot someone over hear he can be sued by the criminals family and lose his job even though if he hadn't shot them he would be dead himself. Being a cop is a job of quick thinking and very high stress yet we pay our officers less than any other world power. I know there is some bad cops out there but compared with how many good cops our out there it is no comparison. For anyone who thinks our police need more restrictions and we need to allow victims families to sue them take a trip to Germany and break the law. See how much more gentle we are.

I think that an investigation will be conducted. The officer will be read their rights. Both IA, and DA, and possibly the Attorney General will investigate the shooting. Not all shootings are justified or legal. If they are not, the officer will at the very least be terminated, or at worst be prosecuted. (know a few who have). You don't get away with "oops" or "I was scared" when you are a cop.
So, you think it is OK for a cop to shot a car thief, a shoplifter, or or other non-violent crime? If you think so, please never apply for the job, you are not worthy.
It is hard to sue a cop personally under California's shield law. Unless you can prove malice (as in they did in on purpose), or willful disregard for departmental policies and the law, obtaining a judgment from the individual officer is nearly impossible. You can sue the department. If it is cheaper to pay out, they usually will. Risk managers are employed by every large agency whose job is to determine just that.

I think of all the restrictions that are placed on our officers re. even being allowed to draw their weapons. I think of how the suspect has the upper-hand from the get-go, as there are very specific guidelines (restrictions) on the officer drawing his weapon, but the suspect doesn't play by any civilized rules. I think of the officer's own personal and family aftermath in the wake of a shooting, and how their lives and souls will be forever altered because some scumbag forced their hand in order to protect innocent lives- yours and mine. I think of these things and remind myself to say a prayer for the fine men and women of law enforcement in this country.

Do you idiots actually reread what you are saying? Don't you think it is highly possible that the cop may have to protect him/herself? How about protecting your sorry asses that want to prosecute the cop for having to make a quick decision???
Pathetic.... I hope you remember how you feel about a cop shooting someone the next time you are being attacked and the cop doens't take the shot that will keep your moronic asses out of a hospital bed for the next 6 months. And don't think you can sue the police force over it... you said you didn't want the cops shooting.

Well, as a good, patriotic liberal, I think that another poor person of color and victim of the white male hegemony, unfair capitalism, and Christian patriarchy of the West has been unfairly targeted by a pig! LOL
Just kidding... I'm not a lib...

That the criminal must have done something to provoke the officer or drawn a gun first or something like that.

For all the bleeding hearts crying for the criminal, here is a tissue.
Innocent people do not put themselves in a position where they risk being shot by the police.

Billy bad-a** cops being the judge, jury, and executionaire.
I don't watch "Cops" on Fox because the cops seem to dare a guy at a normal traffic stop to blink so they can shoot a red-neck or minority on T.V. and get away with it.
Look at the Rodney King incident. They beat the h*ll out of him, way beyond necessary force. But during the trial, they were saying he was trying to get back up. Not in the vid's I saw, The only time his body moved up was from the action/reaction motion (physics) when they hit him with their billy-clubs.
What if cop pulls you over at night, tells you to get out of the car, and mistakes your seat belt unclicking for the sound of a pistol hammer drawing back??? Your dead meat. But don't worry, you were "lunging" at them or you so happened to (now) have an unmarked pistol in your possession.
I know there are good cops and great cops out there. But there are also those that think they above the law and are as immoral and unethical as the criminal element. Those are the ones that Internal Affairs needs to clean house of.
