Dogs are victims of several internal parasites frequently referred to as worms. Roundworms, hookworms, tapeworms, whipworms, and heartworms.

The most common are the roundworms that infest most puppies at some time in their young lives and tapeworms that can be a big problem when flea infestations are high.

Evidence of roundworms and tapeworms can be seen without the aid of a microscope, but other worms are not so easily diagnosed. Occasionally adult whipworms can be seen in the stool when the infestation has already caused some debilitation or weight loss in the dog.

Hookworm infestation in dogs can lead to severe anemia, especially in puppies. These hookworms have big appetites and attach to the intestine and feed on the dog's blood.

Surveys consistently identify whipworms (Trichuris vulpis) as one of the most common parasitic worms of dogs in North America, while only infrequently being reported in cats or humans. They live in the lower aspects of the intestines (the cecum and colon) where they latch on to feed. Sometimes they cause no problems at all but they may cause abdominal upset (colic) or diarrhea, often tainted by blood and mucus.

Heartworms are carried by mosquitoes, and have no symptoms until infestation is heavy and mature..the best treatment for heartworm is prevention, as the treatment of the mature worms is very risky..these won't normally be in very young puppies.

the new preventative, REVOLUTION kills fleas, ticks, mites, and prevents heartworms, and kills all of the other worms..
As it is a new product, vets are encouraged to give the first treatment free..so it would pay to call the vets in your area, and ask if they carry it yet, and if they give the first treatment for free.
It is just a few drops of liquid applied to the skin..

roundworms (large and small strongyles), pin worms, hook worms...also parasites like giardia too.

Heartworm prevention like Interceptor will take care of the worms in the GI tract.
