I'm relocating and have a budget about $1200 for rent. I saw some very good looking apartments online, but they were all in central or west harlem. I heard it's an area of new renovations, but still want to know if it's safe for a 23 year old female to live in. If not where are some areas I can look into. I will be working by Penn Station. thanks :)

Just returned from a visit to NYC and met a young couple that live in Harlem - they were saying that it's now a great place to live with new construction, etc. This couple said that a few years back it wasn't safe but things have changed and is now a part of the real estate boom - I also took a tour thru Harlem and the guide said that rent is still reasonable (for NY that is!) So, you should be able to find a place -you might want to check with a real estate rental agent for more information. :)

What is "safe?" - New Yorkers get murdered on Park Avenue and Madison Avenue. There are problem areas all over the city.

There is new constrution in Harlem, there is a Starbucks! High-end apartments for rent . . . it's still Harlem. The new construction is not in the "bad" areas of Harlem. Try to find out if there is a bus tour that goes to Harlem, see for yourself what it's like.

If it is your first time living in New York City, and you will be out at night, wining and dining, theater, etc. I would not live there! It's better to be closer to mid-town Manhattan. If there is a snow-storm, you get stuck up there on the bus, or subway problems, it will take a long time to get to Penn Station, you don't want to be late for work.

It is better than it was not-so-long-ago.
MidTown is easy to get to from ANYWHERE in the city, Harlem give you lots of Subway and bus options.

If you are working near Penn Station, consider also New Jersey and Queens or Long Island. Easy Commuting if you live near a NJ Transit ot LIRR train line.
DO NOT TRY TO COMMUTE TO MID-TOWN BY DRIVING A CAR !
Try Craigs List for apartments.

Yeah, once you're used to mattress-Stuy (lower back in 2000), then East Harlem must be ok. there are a number of housing projects there, notwithstanding it has gentrified heavily. i'm hoping this information become very powerful.

Call and talk to the local Police Precinct or talk to local Pastors of nearby churches, definitely research things well. Look at crime stats for the area your looking to locate to , one thing nice about the web is the information at your fingertips. P.S. Don't just take someones word for it from here. Research it well.!! Double P.S.P.S..... real estate agents get paid to fill their vacancies, their advice might be bias.
