My former roommate moved back to Alaska, and left her dog with me, promising to send for it. It's been a month, and she finally emailed me to let me know that she couldn't send for it, and to find it a new home. "It" is a small Chihuahua mix, about 4 pounds, female, unspayed, no shots or any kind of medical care. I need to find her a new home. Is anyone here into Chihuahua rescue, or would be interested in giving her a new home? Would it be mean of me just to surrender her to the shelter? Being that she is a small dog, I'm nearly positive she will find a good home. My "friend" has never given me a single dime to pay for this dog's care, and the dog is getting a bit expensive. I've tried the local small dog rescue, but they weren't able to take her. What do you all think I should do? The main issue is that I have to rehome her by the end of the month, because I'm moving, and there is no place in the new house to put her.
Thanks for your imput!

We live in Tuscaloosa, Alabama and if anyone is interested in adopting her, I'd be glad to drive a few hours for them to meet her.

Boy I hate stuff like this since Im a sucker for abanonded animals. What about a shelter near where your moving, is there one there you could call or is it the same shelter that turned you down? What about calling the local churches and seeing if they will announce you have a dog available when they do the announcements? You could also really make the effort to find a way to take care of this poor thing who didn't ask to be put in this situation. I hate when people like your friend get animals to be recepticles for their emotional issues then realize it takes work and comittment to take care of an animal then abandon it. Please try and do right by it ok? Peace!

Don't be positive it will find a new home. Over 6 million healthy loveable dogs and cats are euthanized at shelters each year due to pet overpopulation and lack of good homes.

Your former roomate should be shot, fined and jailed for taking on the responsibility of an animal and then leaving it to fend for itself. In my county you can get a $500 fine for abandoning an animal.

See if your humane society has certificates or reduced fees to get the dog spayed. That will go a long way to helping ease pet overpopulation. Then list the dog on www.petfinder.com and screen the people who call very carefully.

Try to find her a new home, or a rescue as a last resort. DO NOT send her to a shelter. This is very traumatic for a dog, not to mention disease infested. Why don't you take the effort to find her a new home, that way you can sleep at night knowing she is being well taken care of. If you can't find her a home on your own, call a rescue. Do a google search for rescues in your area, or check petfinder.com

You know, I don't really KNOW what to say here. I think it is wonderful that you have looked after the dog. Is there anyway you can get it to the vet and give it a nice home?

Some people just make me mad, like your friend, to just leave a dog under such poor circumstances. I mean the dog needs a vet and proper health care.

You could take the dog to a local pound and explain the circumstances. Sadly, the dog has to suffer through all this. I wish I could take her.

Good Luck and Take Care

Seeing as she basically surrendered her dog to you I'd find a local no kill shelter and surrender the dog to it. You can search yahoo groups for a dog rescue that might be able to help. Whatever you decide hold on to a copy of the email she sent saying she can't send for him. This way no matter what you decide or if she gets a case of the guilts six months from now you've got your self covered with her black and white admission that she can't send for him.

just look on the internet under Chihuahua Rescue. There are tons. Please don't take her to a shelter. being cute and small does not guarantee her a home. it is not her fault that her owner was negligent and why has she not had medical care. she really needs a home where she will be loved. poor thing. what area do you live in?
might be able to help.

I feel for you, but please, please, please try to find someone to adopt her rather than sending her to a shelter. There are many, many rescue groups in most areas (you didn't say where you live or I'd send you a list). If you send her to a shelter, no one will be able to sell her good qualities to prospective adopters. She is probably a good girl, but no one will know if you just send her to a shelter. PLEASE FIND A RESCUE GROUP!!! Or maybe find some local vets and post a flier there. I know you didn't ask for this responsibility, but try and get out of this situation in way that makes it likely this dog will find a good home.

Take her to an animal rescue facility. Look in your phone book.
Try not to take her to the pound unless that's your very last resource. It would be a shame for them to put her down.
Chihuahua's are very popular right now because of Paris Hilton,
Someone will adopt her.

Get her all the necessary shots and medical evaluations. Then call up nursing homes in your area and find out if any accept pets, many do now has they have found the importance of a pet's love in healing. My Grandmother took care of a cat in the home she lived in, and it made her very happy. If none in your area will take her, you may just have a friend for life.

I would suggest calling around to local vets and animal clinics. They'll probably let you post fliers on the bulliten board in the waiting room. It's a great way to find her a good home.
