I would keep a small notebook with you at all times - and write down story ideas as they come to you. That way - you can stay ahead of the game.

Write about things that you feel passionate about, because if you are passionate about it - you will more than likely get it down on time.

Break up your tasks into mini-tasks. This can be done for both your work on the newspaper as well as your regular school work. It's a great time management skill.

My high school newspaper actually required reporters to segment their work. Reporters generally faced four seperate deadlines for each article they were working on: Interview with primary source, interviews with secondary sources, rough draft of article, and final draft of article.

If you're working on, say, a history paper, you can take a similar approach: set intermediate due dates (also known as benchmarks) by which to have acquired all your sources, complete notes, make an outline and write rough and final drafts.

Go to past years paper and follow that scheme. Allow time for your school work before you work on school paper.
