My vet told us it's ok to clean their ears with q tips and a little rubbing alcohol.

I use a kind of ear cleaning solution bought from the vet. Just squeeze a few drops into the ear canals and then massage the ears for a while. The waxy stuff will usually come out the next day. Then simply wipe the ears with wet tissues.

It's okay to clean your dogs ears with Q-tips, just as long as your not sticking them down in the ear canal. You can rupture his eardrum if you poke too far. I suggest you buy a liquid ear cleaner for dogs, like Malacetic Otic. You can buy it in a pet store or you vet's office. All you do is pour the cleaner in the ear canal, massage the base of the ear for about a minute so the cleaner gets mixed and will work, then let the dog shake it out. Once you have done this to both ears, take a cotten ball or paper towel and wipe out the ear. Take caution not to poke your finger down the ear canal. You should clean your dogs ears every 1-2 weeks, but do it more if your dog has floppy ears. Yeast will build up in a floppy-eared dog because their ears don't get much air. Alcohol can cause a dog to get an ear infection, or rupture their eardrum, or burn if they have any cuts in their ears.
Hope this helps!!!!

when I had a dog, the vet used soft paper towels or kleenex scrunched up in a bunch and just wiped around inside the dogs ears.... then sold me a bottle of ear cleaning stuff that you squirt in their ears and massage with the ear flap closed for a few seconds, then the dog runs around shaking it's head for a minute or so... do this outside !
I can't remember the name of the stuff...the vet will know

I would not use Q-tips to clean my dog's ears. Our vet recommended using a cotton ball lightly moistened with alcohol. Gently rub the outer portion and the dirt comes right off!
Or you can spend money to have someone else do it.

You can put a drop of sweet oil into the ear and massage it gently. That will loosen the debris. Then take a cotton ball and clean what you can. do not probe into the ear with a q tip.

A q tip is perfectly exceptional. As the others have said just don't go sticking it down the ear canal. If this scares you a little just use a tissue scrunched up.

I always use cotton balls and hydrogen peroxide. If you're uncomfortable to do it yourself, have the vet or a groomer do it for you.
