I swear people don't understand this, okay here it goes. The FCC has ordered that on February 18, 2009 all analog over the air broadcasts be stopped, and that anything over the air be digital. The law does NOT mandate that all TV be HDTV. This law only affects people who do not have cable or satellite, so now you do not need to throw out your old TV. Even if you do get over the air signals, all you will need to do is buy a digital tuner, you can still use your old TV.

I really have not studied this. But, The way TV signals are transmitted your TV may still work. What I assume they do, and I have not studied, they add Side Bands for the HDTV. So, the old TV would ignore the sidebands as off Frequencies and still be able to receive a signal. But, if it can not operate properly we fall victim to commercialism and have to spend money for a new TV. But, this not a problem as TV has become a joke of commercialism only those committed to it's inability to entertain due to commercials will comply.
I remember a Star Trek episode I watched once. These people were in suspended animation for later cures to their incurable disease and the Enterprise found them and cured their disease. One man ask about TV and they told it went out in 2010, Ha! Not really sure. But, they said people found better interests. But, that what I have found, I get news and real world stuff on the Inet and if I interested in a movie go see it at the theater, though they sh*t the ads now before the show. I have found that living life is much more fun than Dreaming it on the TV.

You should be able to get an inexpensive receiver for digital broadcasts, so you can keep that set. If you receive cable or satellite, the digital conversion in 2009 won't affect you at all. It is only going to affect broadcast TV.
